Hello everyone,  I've gone and done it.!! Bought the plans, set up the build log, printed the bulkhead patterns. 

Just don't know where I'm going to find the time or space for this one though.

Been a while since I set this log up, but bought myself a used scroll saw at the weekend and actually started cutting the bulkheads and keel former from some 6mm mdf. I have found that mdf cuts very well. With so many bulkheads it's going to be quite a time til I've got them all cut, as I've never used a scroll saw before and am taking my time to get them right. As soon as I have something resembling a skeleton I will post some photos.

Its not a race so take your time.   This group build will be up and running for a very very long time.   Slow and steady!!!!

So, bulkhead cutting is done, so are the keel formers, I did have to re-cut the mid and stern section as for some reason these printed fractionally smaller than the bow section,  all sorted now. I checked them on the drawing for size.

The formers have been glued but the bulkheads are just dry fitted to test, some need a bit of tweaking on the slots.

Still got the filler pieces at the bow and the stern timbers to cut. I'm doing all these cuts before I do the stem and keel to get a bit more practice with the scroll saw.

Not a lot done but I have cut a test stem from some pear I had,  this was done to see if I could manage it.

I think I need to be a bit neater than this for the stem I will use, but as they say practice makes perfect!!😉

I have some cherry boards on their way this week so I'll be cutting another one but hopefully better.

The cherry wood for my stem arrived, I've cut the parts and glued them together. While waiting for the glue to dry the base board was made up.

So with the keel and stem fitted Winchelsea now sits on her build board with the bulkheads just placed in , not glued.

So the mammoth job of fairing the hull is next. I've got plenty of time for that  because of this virus, so I'll come back when I'm something like with the sanding.

Change wording

The hull has been roughly faired and the gunport framing done, the frames for the stern were cut and placed(not glued). I traced the curve of the stern from the deck plans and transferred it to a piece of scrap which was the cut to shape, this was used as I fitted the stern parts to make sure that I had the correct curve.

There was some more fairing done and hopefully I'm about there. I have to make the bollards and the stern filler pieces.

I am relieved to have got the majority of the fairing done although there is a bit more to do at the bow!

Seems ages since I was here last, but I'm still sorting out the stern frames and window formers.

As a break from working on the hull skeleton I had a practice cutting some planks.

for a first ever attempt I'm reasonably pleased although I shall be buying the thinner saw blade for my proxxon, as with the throw away planks which I wont be using, I only managed to get 12 planks.

The kerf being thicker than the cut plank

I assume with 11 sheets you need about 23 from each??

So I acquired the .5mm blade and have cut a few planks to get me started.

Before I get on with the planking I finished the stern frame after having quite hard time getting the filler pieces and temporary window blanks to fit satisfactorily.

have got it!!

All glued except the white pieces, then I realized forgot to cut the circular holes careful drilling later!

So chapter two begins, I am happy to start planking but apprehensive as it's not my favourite activity but I do have all the time in the world to do it.

How are you finding your Proxxon table saw? The Jim Byrnes seems to be the one to have but I suspect with VAT and import duty its probably prohibitively expensive whereas we can still get the Proxxon duty free at least I guess until December. But there is no point in buying the Proxxon unless it really does the job. What are you thoughts?

Thanks Fred, I did look into getting a Byrnes  but with vat and import it was more than twice the cost of the Proxxon. If I take my time cutting with the Proxxon  and using the .5mm blade it's doing  the job and more if I'm honest.  I'm happy with it! Btw Chronos Ltd have it UK ready !

I have to admit I've bought chapters 2 and 3 from Chuck as I feel the stern and QGalleries are a step too big for me to scratch, (maybe on the next ship).

I'm liking the challenge and if I produce a model a fraction as good as those in the group I'll be very happy. 😁

Got a few quiet hours early morning today and the first planks have been fitted. Thanks Chuck for the information on the run of the wales into the stem as I was able to alter the position of the test batten before glueing any wood👍

Planked lower counter, laser cut pieces are superb!

First planks fitted,  it's a good job there's another layer on top.

Starboard side wale, just need to take even more care and eradicate small gaps in future. 

I have one question,  what have people done underneath the lower counter where the planking terminates?

This is a bit of a downer post 😥as made a schoolboy error and the wales were not low enough midships and did not have enough space to put a full width 1/4" plank on underneath the midship gun ports. I would have been notching round the ports on the first  plank above the black strake.  After an hour or so measuring and re-measuring I made the decision to remove the few planks I had fitted and start again.

Good morning everyone, 

The decision to remove the planks was hard but as Chuck points out not to do so would have caused difficulties further into the build. So off they came and the lie of the wales was redone and carefully a "second" first strake was fitted, the rest just flowed and I'm back to where I was with the starboard wale first layer done.

The gap between the port sills and the black strake now allows for a full 1/4" plank and a small amount of notching on the subsequent plank.

I myself feel happier with the re-work.

I've also made one of the bollards but have plenty of blanks on hand in case of mistakes.

Good evening/afternoon/morning, I've been busy planking the topsides and round the gunports, I'm reasonably content that it's ok and with a fair amount of sanding will look better.

I've dry fitted the bollards but may make another pair as I'm not completely happy with this attempt 

But for now Winnie is off the build board and sitting upside down on a stand I've knocked up for continuing planking the hull below the wales 

I just have to fit the drop planks and the first two strakes before lining out the bulkheads for the plank runs.

Now Winnie is upside down, planking continues painfully slowly as I'm probably getting one strake on each time. Life has had an impact on my modelling time but I've got the first band of planking plus the drop plank in place on the starboard side. I will recheck the lining off for the next 3 bands and adjust as necessary.

It's been awhile since I've done much to Winnie, what with Christmas and stuff but I am getting back on with her, and have started the internal fairing, which as most of you know is very awkward, dusty and tedious. Also having to wait for dry weather as it's being done outside. Hopefully I'll be back on the lower hull planking by February. 

There's no photos as I don't think pictures of clouds of sanding dust need preserving.
