HMS Sphinx 1775 by Jasseji (Jacek) - Vanguard Models - 1:64

Recommended Posts

I couldnt resist already setting up a Placeholder for the Build Log.

Sadly my Sphinx is still stuck waiting for release back to UPS from The Gods of Customs and Taxation (Can take up to 10 days from that point i heard)

I paid the fees already, it would be cheaper to drive the 800km up to Chris and pick it up and back, not Chris's fault of course, just FYI for those from Germany, the Fees add up to about 1/4 of the Kit's Price

My Log will propably not be as Tidy and she wont turn out as pretty as the others but even failures need to be documented.

Tools prepared:

- Exacto Knife and a few Stanleys as Backup

- Various Shapes Modeller Files

- Sandpaper different grit and Sanding Block

- Sanding Sticks

- Assortment of Tweezers

- Different Army Painter and Citadel Brushes

- Automatic Pencil and 30cm Steel ruler

- Planking Vice

- Guillotine for cutting planks

- Travel Iron for Edge-Bending

- Home-Made Plank bender tool made from Pliers

- Dremel with sanding discs and barrels

- CLAMPS and Vices

- Airbrush

- Various Vallejo Paints - Model Color and Model Air

- PVA Glue

Judging from your lady nelson you will be fine.  I looked at the Manual for Sphinx and it's 146 pages of really good instructions.  I feel like very few people will abandon this kit mid way through.

I can't speak to the customs in Germany but I got the same message about the 10 days here in the US.       But it was released 6 hours later so it is again on schedule for Friday delivery.    Here's hoping the situation will be the same for you

I'm not opening it

Uk has always had great wellsorted hobbyshops, especially whne it comes to ships. However, after leaving EU you have to roughly count for 25% extra on the price. I still order from UK if its not available inside the EU. But buying the latest kit from Tamiya is better to find locally. Vanguards is also a special case, since its a small business with basically no competition in its market segment. Perhaps not for everyone, but if you want the best... you got the best :-). Sphinx looks very tempting, but I have to finalize some of my ongoing kits before I buy another.

Current builds: HMS Victory (Corel 1:98), HMS Snake (Caldercraft 1:64), HMBV Granado (Caldercraft 1:64), HMS Diana (Caldercraft 1:64), HMS Speedy (Vanguard Models 1:64)

Uh, i am looking through the Plan sheets and something is confusing @chris watton

image.png.0aad207a9c962847d4d3686f21db1a6f.png

Is this a misprint ? The "Plan Sheet" Numbers dont align with the "Supplementary Drawings" Numbers. It propably doesnt really matter, as the Manual lays out the sequence to follow, but is a bit weird

Will look at that again for next reprint, but to be honest, the plans for the hull are for the most part just complementary to the manual. The only plan numbers that matter are the mast and rig plans.

I figured that much, just a tiny nit-pick on a Perfect set :D

Ok, i can't let all the others have fun, so i started:

Cradle Done, nothing to it, it just snaps together:

While going through the fittings, i did discover something weird about the figurehead tho:

image.png.df8a18275ab9a217e84fafa44b1d23be.png

she seems to have lost some weight on her right side, i will see further down the road if i can fix that with some Modelling Putty.

Other than that, i find one thing @chris watton might consider: offering the Kit without the printed manual (or as an option for those who want)

Don't worry about the figurehead, we shall send you a new one with your blocks :)

ETA - I will NEVER offer any of my kits without a printed manual - except for my Japanese distributors, who translate my files and print their own.

I meant "option for no manual" = would spare you the weight and trouble for those who really don't want it on paper

Did the Bow by Hand, but the stern was a pain so reluctantly i started with the Dremel.

I think it turned out ok, propably some touch-ups will be required when the planking is to be done

You're doing well, Jacek.   Like you, I'm holding off on finishing any fairing until just before planking.
