Hi all and many thanks for your replies and likes!

Mark, you question is not easy one ;) I don't have exact example showed scarph joint of margin plank, it is rather my own understanding of carpenters work in those days. Wider planks are seldom simply plan butted, but rather scarped togetter. Margin plank is a wider one... It may be also totaly wrong... ;)

Current build: HMS Sphynx, 20 gun ship launched in 1775 at Portsmouth, Hampshire.

On the drawing board: HMS Anson, 64 gun third rate ship of the line, launched in 1781 at Plymouth

I believe that you are correct, Alex. The waterway/margin plank was a longitudinal stringer that strengthened the sides and, like the deck clamps, would have most likely been joined in the same manner.

Hi Alex;

Thank you for your reply.  I just like to broaden my knowledge whenever possible,  and I have not seen a margin plank joined like this,  although that most certainly does not mean anything much,  as there are a great deal of things I have not yet seen!

Thank you for compiling your log,  and sharing so much with us.  I wish you a rapid and enjoyable completion of your project,  which is a joy to look at,  and which I will look at many more times yet to come.

Druxey,  I appreciate your thoughts,  and I agree with you about the waterway,  but I am assuming that the waterway is the darker strip of wood which will be partly covered by the spirketting.

All the best to you both.

Previously built models (long ago, aged 18-25ish) POB construction. 32 gun frigate, scratch-built sailing model, Underhill plans.

2 masted topsail schooner, Underhill plans.

Started at around that time, but unfinished: 74 gun ship 'Bellona' NMM plans. POB

On the drawing board: POF model of Royal Caroline 1749, part-planked with interior details. My own plans, based on Admiralty draughts and archival research.

Lovely, Alex. And now its on to everyone's favorite task...treenailing!

Oh yes Greg, treenailing! I'm not sure how to process with. The Quarter deck and Forecastle have less dimensioned beams and the distance between is less that on the Gundeck. If I use the usualy treenail schema with two nails on each beam then, I suppose, it will be too much. I will play with photoshop to see how this will looks:

Great to have another update of this very fine model Alex.  i love the contrasting wood between the deck planks, margins/waterway and bulwarks.

Stunning work as usual Alex.  That scraper worked well, the molds look very 'clean'.
