Some nice, neat, planking Boyd! This is just a thought, but is it possible the direction of the grain-flow is reversed on those planks? Maybe rotating 180 degrees end-for-end, leaving the same face up, might change the appearance of the shading? Don't know about maple too much, but maybe a test of a few planks might show something one way or the other. Cheers

Nice job on the upper's Dale. I might "steal" that process of "off the ship" myself if it's all right. Cheers

Those chisels came out fantastic Matt! What will you be doing to amaze us next? After those squirrels take their short, and well-earned vacation of course. Cheers

Mayflower by SawdustDave - Finished
GLakie replied to SawdustDave's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1751 - 1800
Just found your build log Dave. (So many, and so little time!) Your Mayflower looks marvelous! Very nice attention to detail. I know it's a little late in the day, but Happy Birthday and be there many more in your future. Cheers -

Looking nice Piet! Been using the old "wet the wood" trick for many years. It works amazingly well on hardwood to get that smooth-as-glass finish. Just wet, let it dry, then block-sand. Doing that 2 or 3 times usually does the trick. Cheers

I'm going to echo what the other guys have said, and also add that maybe that ebony plank could be flipped end for end to correct those drops. In the pic, it almost looks like it's curved downward at the ends. Probably just me! Cheers

I like your work-space Boyd! Good choice for the Mill and accessories. Oh, about your recent purchases, who's the "lucky" one now? Cheers

Need help identifying this tool
GLakie replied to Modeler12's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
You're more than welcome Jay. They are expensive at $25, but Xuron makes the best cutters and nippers out there. Your Mom-in-Law has good taste in tools. -

Jay: Is there a number on those cutters someplace? It kind of looks like these: http://www.micromark.com/End-Nipper,11459.html?sc=WGB&utm_source=GoogleBase&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=GoogleBase&gclid=CjwKEAiAlvilBRC5ueCzkpXb4kgSJADxop1B6UrKveQVj0IjXfKeIuOq2NZvsEqh7maL48ctSWBF3xoCwv_w_wcB at Micro-Mark Cheers -

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
