Grunge coat, I have added a light coat off buff the bottom of the hull, next will be some clear green to represent even more hull grunge. I have tried to remove a lot of the salt, but I suspect when I give the hull a clear coat even more will go.

She looks very very long in that picture. Big model, for sure.

Green grunge next, using Tamiya clear green oversprayed. I will given it a diluted black wash to dull it down and add some texture. The final step will be putting the 4 propellers into some blackening agent to dull them down as well.  When I finally put the model on its' base I will cut the brass rods right down so it will sit about an inch off the base so the underside will not be so obvious.

 

Yes Mr Rabbit the kit is huge. Painting these large areas is challenging to say the least, as you never know how much to put in the airbrush. It also makes it hard to photograph. 

 

I'm somewhat satisfied with my first attempt at weathering to date.

You've been stepping it up, very nice result on the weathering. I am still sticking to brass (currently "pulling" cables at the outside of the hull). I am curious how she will look after you give her that clear coat

I dulled down the green a tad, the the shiny brass props which would look a bit silly glowing under the grunge, so I used some blacken it and a light grey overspray.

So many little pieces to paint for the rear flight deck! I have value added to the boat hangar doors as well as adding some voice pipes and seats to the crane controller which had no detail at all.

The front of the ship, with the aftermarket capstans and the kit included leadsman's platforms. This has not yet been properly weathered.

Now the rear aircraft deck with machine gun controllers, anchors, and the lino strips used for the aircraft and the gun pits. Once weathered, I will sand back the brass strips that hold back the lino. Also the boat hangar door with some added strips.

I'm really not going to get much done over the next few weeks due to work and kids sport, but!!!! Amazon UK has now released and posted the new AOTS Yamato book to me here in Oz, so, the drum roll begins as to what is now wrong with the kit. 

 

I have also also ordered some more aftermarket PE, being Davits for the side of the hull as I just don't like the kit ones. 

 

I am putting off doing belaying points points for rigging on the superstructure as I want to see if there is something more difinative.

I'm following your efforts with great interest and respect, being very frequently amazed by the results.........a real feast for the eye.

Allow me to throw in my 5 cents regarding weathering.................yes, the ships are being cleaned and rinsed with fresh water every day, but......

that is, allowed by excersise agenda's and weather conditions. Especially the latter, if weather is turning bad passage on the deck is very quickly forbidden, so no deck activities other then directed by exercises. After a week of taking water and no cleaning, the ship looks like a mess. There are some pics on the net of ships returning to harbour after some time in bad weather......terrible........

So, weather your Yamato as you like......it always fit a condition....................

Great progress greg; hopefully the book will not expose too much difference.  You have certainly made some major improvements to the base kit.

Seriously amazing detail even compared to the first edition. I think if you are going to have a proper go at this beast you can't do it without this. 335 pages long! 

 

im currently doing up the 24 MG turrets at the moment and struggling with the PE, and have decided to strip them down and start again. Sloppy is lazy.

I took of some brass of the main (front) tower, as it got stuck on crooked, as you say, sloppy is lazy ... good decision

Impressive job!  My neighbor in Hawaii who babysat my son in the'70's brother was an Ensign on her last run. Oh, her other sister ship was converted to an aircraft carrier and was sunk moving to a 'safer' shipyard by USS Archerfish at the approaches to Tokyo Bay. Just a historical note.

I ordered mine from amazon.co.uk and got it last week.  Greg's right, if you're thinking about doing the Yamato or the Musachi, then you can't go without this new edition. The detail it's got is amazing and i had the older edition as well. You can't compare the two editions, the new one has answered a lot of questions i had.  

 

It has given me new worries though as well.  The stern has completely changed and i don't know if should change it to my model.

You may want to look at bookdepository. They are meanwhile actually owned by Amazon but quite often cheaper, at least for me here in Canada. I got my copy of the AOTS Yamato/Musashi within the usual 5 days across the Atlantic some 10 days ago. There are some annoying errors in it, e.g. don't trust the scales. And some drawings are in smaller scale (but the description didn't change) than in the first issue. It is good to have both if you don't want to use a magnifier.

I think they have pretty much answered most of the questions left out in the first edition. The stern is different but too late for me now.

If one is more technically and historically inclined there is also the book by Lengerer and Ahlberg, The Yamato Class and Subsequent Planning. Not necessarily what one wants as a modeller but lots of additional information that could be of interest if one is looking for information about the actual construction, planing, and history of this type of ship. I haven't seen a mention of this book around here.
