Welcome on  the build of Revell's Bounty scale 1/110

I got this kit for free from friends who cleaned up their attic.

My first idea when I opened the box. Was oops ....

On closer examination, it turned out that the model design probably dates from 1956. The mold is from 1978. Therefore the "lesser quality" of the details to current standards.

IMG_20181128_202451.thumb.jpg.6fdd20082c164623f60fd54ec871a76c.jpgIMG_20181128_202532.thumb.jpg.7855de5a9d1f1d88c4926a323d6dc9c3.jpg

First, i wanted to throw everything away. But it had some trouble with this idea.

So why not start on it and try to add some extra details.

This will not be an exact copy. My biggest challenge to make this model a bit nicer than what can be made with the contents of the kit. I am not going to buy extra parts, only items and plastic sheet from the parts box will be used.

My only experience with plastic ship models dates from my younger years.  I have only experience with military models in scale 1/72

So we shall what the future brings.

Main goals are : making of a good model and have fun.

Both hull halves are glued together with the deck.
All molded on details on the inside are first sanded away. The round cannon ports are made square and all holes in the hull that are not needed are closed.
The outside of the hull is now being cleaned up.

I’ve build the Beagle from Revell once, probably around the same year it came from it’s mold and do look so similair to your Bounty...

Nice kit and good luck with the build.

Thank you,

In the meantime, a cautious start has been made with the fitting of bolts. These must be carefully sanded later
And an attempt to imitate the "nails and planks"

"bolts and nails" are made of stretched spreu

The copper sheeting has been slightly sanded. Now I have started to apply imitation nails. I use a large steel needle for this.

Work in progres, still much to do and new hinges must also be made for the rudder.

Thanks.

I used sheet of 0.2mm thickness. Too thick for this scale, of course. But the result is not that bad.

update,
The copper sheeting is ready. The rudder now has 4 hinges as it should be (The model had only 3 hinges).

The railing has been removed again, it was not really what it was supposed to be.

Welcome back to this fun build of a little Bounty.

I started reapplying the removed parts.
The belaying pins( primitive, but better than the original) and new steering wheel is under construction.

A piece of cargo bed from a 1/72 truck is perfect for the hatches on the deck.

Installed a new railing and all the cannon supports are in place
And also added some extra detail to the beakhead.IMG_20191017_193932.thumb.jpg.db6b3dc7c15b63c369af8dbe0808ccdc.jpgIMG_20191017_194001.thumb.jpg.4d63e1abb623da93adbe7e69aef52b17.jpgIMG_20191018_183622.thumb.jpg.2d67cd0c9ee6b610932bb346c292d7eb.jpgIMG_20191021_190931.thumb.jpg.b0099190bbd49eac8e099d3341a7db52.jpg

Once again, you're doing a great service to an older kit. Great upgrades and fantastic photos, we can all learn from your example. I have to ask, in one of the photos in post #13 there is a ship in the background, what ship is that?

My version of the Golden Hind.

Small update,

Looking around this forum for different Bounty logs. It seems like there are different models. Every manufacturer of ship models has its own version.
I go for this solution.

Update,

The chimney from the kitchen below deck. On most models, the output faces forward. On the old plan it is directed backwards.

Further progress

Made a ship's wheel, a capstan, pumps and a "dovecote" on the stern. All made of leftovers from the partsbox

And added eye bolts

the original partsIMG_20191121_184035.thumb.jpg.aad1586c6695bfd7f46632912a19de6c.jpg

A new ship's wheel (not yet glued on the deck)

the wheel itself is in the front of the axel and not in the rear as on most model kits

IMG_20191120_202128.thumb.jpg.ac6b4abc766eb92845bb2e3c87993887.jpg

the capstan and 2 pumps.

The capstan (could be made better, but scale 1/110 is small) There are 2  pumps as on the origal drawing of the ship, and not a chain pump as on this kit.

IMG_20191122_200827.thumb.jpg.267d8157793ade5590e2c16ea8a751f4.jpg

The dovecote.

It looks like that this "dovecote" served to store the signal flags. The front part protects the rudder (not yet ready)

Adjusted and mounted on deck

The chimney for the galley stove was called, in English use, the "Charlie Noble."

Rather a lot of those were able to rotate, so that the wind over the deck improved the "draw" of the chimney (having the exhaust end face into the wind would push air back down to the stove--these chimneys were often quite short, so the draft was important).

At anchor, the wind would generally be over the bow.  At sea, the wind would be through an arc of around 200-220º centered on the stern.

Some Charlie Noble will hae a handle on them above deck to be able to turn them down wind.  Others will just have a handle under the deck beams to the same end--sadly, the plans often do not tell us of these fine details (which were often left to the preference of the shipyard building).

This is one more case where the people of old crassly and meanly focused on what was important to them, utterly without consideration of the minutae we modelers might require centuries later.  The meanies 😀

I was wrong to assume, the "dovecote" had something to do with pigeons...

Thanks,

We had pigeons at home. My father, and I, were "duivenmelkers"  translate to English??.
My childhood was influenced by pigeons, pigeons, pigeons.
So, my first idea was "a dovecote"
