This reminds me of a neighbor I had when I was a kid.  He used to say "at my age, I don't buy green bananas".

I have an idea for you, Bob.  If you look at Chuck's post 1151 and his new post today, you could start on the forecastle bulwark and deck planking.  They require no laser cut parts and he has issued the deck planking plan sheets.  Like Chuck said, you'll whip right through it, but it would be something you can work on now.  I really enjoy all of your build logs and I'm glad to be building Winnie at the same time you are.

Thanks guys. I'm sure that I've used that "green banana" line myself.

Matt, great minds must think alike. I came to the same thought just before reading your post, and I've started on that focs'l work.

Just remember that some of you guys skipping ahead are missing a few details and making some oversights which will eventually be written up in the chapter.   I have seen quite a few on the logs of folks who have skipped ahead and missed stuff on previous chapters.   I cant blame you guys about the age thing and wanting to run through the project quickly but just be aware.....you may be backtracking a bit, or at least leaving off a few parts etc.

For example.

On the cat tails.  There should be a small triangular piece that will help sell the illusion of the catheads being created in one piece.   Most of the guys who have planked already, missed that.  Among a few other things.  I know you guys are eager but I cant rush through the next chapter.  It will be ready soon enough.  I have seen others on previous chapters really paint themselves into a corner.   We are almost at the end.....nothing worse than tripping on the way to the finish line.  No disrespect meant...just a friendly suggestion.

Another suggestion,  maybe spend the time while waiting for chapter 9 by creating a wonderful stand and or case for your model.

Hahaha Matt, first the sneeze wood, then giving your old ugly kit(s) away to someone you don’t like, then the carving and headreail porn and now the green bananas.

I feel we must go to the pub sometime together and have some large pints!

And your latest updates look awesome and very beautifully build Bob! It’s a piece of art already and if it were to stay the way it looks now, I would definitely display it in my living room!

I like reading these Winnie build logs for ever more reasons day by day!

Frank.

Well, I just couldn't resist any longer. I have added the f'castle bulwark planking,  the f'castle margin planks and the outer f'castle deck planking. Hopefully, this won't cause me any future problems. Now, it's back to waiting again.

I received my chapter nine parts, downloaded the monograph chapter, and finally got back to work after a long break. I added the quarterdeck inner planking, prepainted red. I then added the various cap rail parts after painting them black. The laser cut parts are great and make the work very straightforward. I sanded, filled and resanded the various joints and then repainted those areas.

Thanks so much Glenn, JJ ,Don and Thomas for the very generous comments. Thanks also to the "likes". I'm so glad to be back at it that I have to force myself to stop.

I know just how you feel Bob. I'm usually with you on this but fortunately life forced a slow down on me. Now I'm learning from your fine work.

Bob - I am not sure if I will actually build the Winnie. But I decided to build some of the mini kits. The Stove is particularly of interest to me. It is a fun project and something I can tackle in 2 or 3 days. I have been following your build of the Winnie and I wish I had your skills. On the stove I would like to ask a question - On the laser cut stencil for the grating there is a square piece the same size as the grating. I have looked everywhere. Can you tell me where to install it. I am sure I have overlooked something but I am stumped.

Current Builds - 18th Century Longboat, MS Syren

Completed Builds - MS Bluenose, Panart BatteStation Cross section, Endevour J Boat Half Hull, Windego Half Hull, R/C T37 Breezing Along, R/C Victoria 32, SolCat 18

On the shelf - Panart San Felipe, Euromodel Ajax, C.Mamoli America,

I'm afraid Floyd that I can't answer your question. I have no memory of the contents of the various laser cut sheets or of the specific part you're asking about. I'm sure that Chuck would be in a better position to give you an answer. Sorry.

There are instructions for the stove on the Syren website. I suggest reading those.

I have gone over the instructions very carefully and I can only guess this piece is extra.

Continuing on with chapter nine.. I  did the quarterdeck margin planks, the waterways and then the outer quarterdeck planking,  which was bent and tapered in accordance with the templates. Moving to the forecastle, I made up the coamings and gratings, using the laser cut parts, and laid the middle planking around them. The planks were tapered in accordance with the template. The decking was finished with a coat of Wipe-on Poly. I also added the foremast bitts, which had been previously made, and were pinned and glued in place and glued the stove stack in place. Lastly, I added the fore mastcoat, and the eyebolts alongside.
