using all that cool nautical terminology

Ha! I sit here with the AotS book in my lap while I write these posts trying to learn the terminology and but in my head I describe it as "the rope that ties off on the thingie" or similiar.

It is starting to get busy on the mast (and I forgot how tricky it can be to tie off lines...). I'll eventually add rope coils so much of these tie offs will probably be hidden anyway.

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0246.jpg.77b6f54ad12e67df9d41860810b1a72f.jpg

I struggled a bit getting the yards parallel to each other but in the end I think its pretty close (and I still have the topgallant yard to fix, but I think - pray - that I'm over the hill with these three up). Whenever I look at the pictures I see some small issues with the ropes, there are two that I may try to tighten after looking at the picture below, but then I recall tying them off so we'll see 😁).

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0243.jpg.6fa2a3622f4907586ab1b436479e8eff.jpg

I painted the line brown that was to be used for the tack toggles, but I'm not certain if it actually conveys the look due to the knot seemingly being oversized for the scale.

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0245.jpg.95ec944a18508ae48f73bbff8c0def02.jpg

Finally my conundrum - securing the yards to the mast. If you look in the picture below you'll see the yard is pulling away from the mast and the pin is visible. I suppose I'll use some temporary holding lines to keep it straight and glue it to the mast with a touch of PVA. I hope that holds up against the squaresail yard bowlines.

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0247.jpg.cd746fe5418680aa61e9151ac589083d.jpg

I'm also pondering how to do the topsail brace. There is a block setup in the AotS book and the instructions, but its a little unclear where the tie off on the bowsprit would be (and a closeup of the bowsprit in the AotS book doesn't show the tie-off point, but that isn't the only inconsistency in the book unfortunately). I'll keep thinking about it, but if anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them.

And here is how she sits currently.

Looking very nice.

On those tie off's, keep them simple and cover with coils..

I like this example provided by SpyGlass

Great picture, are there any details/links on how to simulate the tie off at the top? Also I’ve seen a few different types of rope coils (I’ll try to get a picture or two linked but I think after a quick google it is typically a could for unattached rope so I may have answered by question...), is there any reason to do one compared to the other?

I think it's a matter of " what looks good to you..

Google " images of belaying pins "..

You will see a lot of nice coils..

Looking great!

On your yards/spars, they really shouldn't be touching the mast, but since you've pinned them, your solution is as good as any.   You could also try to push them far enough off the mast to cut/remove the pins, but at this point that might cause a lot of grief you don't want should anything go wrong!

I made the simulated tie-offs as part of making the rope coils.  Here is a link to the post where I show the jig and explain how I make the coils, but the picture of a coil is place is pretty terrible.

Here is a post I made showing rope coils on various ships in San Diego.

And here is a post showing the little jig in full use and some much better pictures of the results on the model.

That is incredibly helpful. I really appreciate being able to see the loop at the top, that was the part that I hadn’t figured out yet. Thank you!

Doh! Oh well, I could possibly trim the pin off but that could very well end up poorly. Yet another tidbit to recall for next time. Very helpful post!

I belayed mine at the pin rail above the windlass.

I struggled a bit getting the yards parallel

As BlackAdder would comment..."they are as parallel as a very parallel thing" 😉

Your build looks so clean and all parts look like they do in the manual.... can't say more than that.

The pins on the spars are fine and a good idea Tim, of course it isn’t historically accurate, but it’s a model.  You don’t want them bouncing all over the place,  Cut the pin shorter and/or hold it tight against the mast with a pin dab of C A.

Thank you all for the likes and comments.

It would appear that I'm rounding third on the Alert. I have basically all the lines rigged and have been working a little bit on the detail work. On my to do list is to finish the rope coils, rig the anchors, and try my hand at making an ensign for her. I also purchased an 18' cutter mini kit from Vanguard to distract me while I whittle away at the remains. I plan to display the cutter behind my Alert in a similar fashion to the Cole model. Speak of display, do anyone have any recommendations for cases in the US? Also, how much breathing room around the ship feels right to you all? I know some don't like cases, but I don't like dusting even more 😁.

The same fellow mentioned his pleasure with Grandpa’s Cabinets also mentioned that they are in Florida. Someone else suggested getting anti-glare glass/plexi/etc.

Thanks @drjeckl @Ryland Craze @EricWilliamMarshall @Edwardkenway  I appreciate the comments and suggestions. I’ll look into those places this weekend (I also need to scout the house an land on a location which may impact the case). Ironically I have a source for plexiglass but lack the tools to make my own case at the moment.

Nice rope work Tim - it's looking great. I like the crisp look of a well painted model, the black and red are a nice contrast to the wood and white hull.  Very nice looking ship you've got there.  Well done!

BTW where did you find your build board stand? I've looked for those and always seem to get an out of stock notice.

build board stand

I picked it up from here: http://www.hobbyworld-usa.com/Store/index.php?id_product=2074&controller=product

I'm at a little bit of a quandary - how do I lash the anchors? When I try to tie them off the stock seems to interfere with the rigging  below as shown here:

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0260.jpg.6e0388ebbb5f131bcc9124bdd00ede88.jpg

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0263.jpg.9e01d659587f3488a1259cd7b020eb4d.jpg

I'll keep looking for a solution, but how should I lash this so it doesn't interfere with the rigging? I'm not quite following the lashing in the instructions - that calls for it to be looped off the cathead, but even doing that appears as it will cause some interference... Hmmm.

HM_Alert_Vanguard_0264.jpg.0a895d3aadbc574be594c63b7f3ed6a5.jpg

Edit: It looks like the instructions have the anchor one timber head further back. I think (hope?) this will provide enough clearance.

I appreciate it; how is the guitar going? I keep anxiously awaiting a pen duick update 😉

It's going well and I'm really enjoying it. I'm focusing on mostly fingerstyle arrangements of Brazilian bossa nova classics...also a few jazz standards and some Beatles. I just can't seem to pull myself away from the guitar at the moment but I will return to the Pen Duick soon.

I moved the anchor a few times and for the moment I settled on a position slightly back. It is not perfect (there still is some interference), so I am open to suggestions, but without a better idea I think that it could work. 🤔

After a little over a year I have finished my Alert (completion shots below and it appears that I may have to do a little dusting already).

One note that may help new builders in the future (but it may not be the ideal method) is that after I overpainted the flag (on silkspan) and let the paint dry I misted it with water, shaped it and then let it dry out again. Once it was dry the flag held it's shape very well. I have picked up Vanguard's version 1 of their 18' cutter (if I had only waited a week or so I couldn't gotten V2, but timing is everything 😄) which I hope to complete for the final display and I have to figure out a case so I'll hopefully add a few final encased pictures when the time comes.

I enjoyed this kit very much - thank you all for following along and all the likes, advice and words of encouragement.
