Sloop Speedwell 1752 by Chuck - Ketch Rigged Sloop - POF - prototype build

Recommended Posts

Are you, by any chance, going to make the capsquares available as a stand alone purchase for use with the resin barrels and gun carriages already available? I hope so!

I am presently rigging the guns on my Winchelsea. I shall follow your rigging of the guns with interest and I suspect a sinking feeling when I see how a master does it.

Best wishes

Fred

I wish I could.   I dont think I can make them that small.  The ones for speedwell are about as small as I can make them.

It seemed to work out just fine....But I will let you guys be the judge.

These are so small.  But they will save so much time.  They are very difficult to photograph being black....ish.

These take a while to cut so please comment on yea or nay.   I dont want to make a bunch and then nobody buys them.  I would say $10 per set to cover all the guns on the Winnie.

Wish I had the choice back when I made mine, my answer would have been yes.

Too late for my Winnie but perhaps my Portland (someday) will like a few sets of these.

Give me a few days and I will make about a dozen packages for the Winnie.  I will post when they are ready and available in my store.

Those are really quite amazing Chuck. I’ve spent a bit of time now really thinking about how you made those on the laser table and I’m coming up with a blank stare into my coffee cup. They look 3D printed.

  • 3 weeks later...

I took a break today from making blocks and rope to test rig one of my guns.  I think it all worked out well enough.  It had been many many years since I rigged any guns.  I think Cheerful was the last time I did this.

Anyway...I went with a 5" single block (5/32") for the tackles with .018 tan rigging.   For the Breach line I went with .055 tan rope.   I also used my acrylic rigging hooks for the tackle but I did make the ring bolts from 24 gauge black wire.  I really wanted to establish the length for the breach line in this test so you guys would know how long to make them.   The Breech line was 6" long end-to-end.   I rigged it just like I did on Cheerful and Confederacy.  These details will be spelled out in a step by step once I rig the other seven.  This was just the first test run.  My goal was to make the guns look like they have some very natural and properly hanging ropes.  I am not sure if I pulled it off but I am happy with the results.   The next 7 guns should get better...as I get used to rigging and rope-work again.

And yes...rigging the guns is optional but this time I decided to take the plunge.

Hi Chuck - awesome stuff, as usual.  I’m looking forward to your gun rigging tutorial.  Presently, I’m struggling through that exercise in 1:96.  I’d be very curious to know more about the specifics of how you attach hooks to tackles, and so forth.

We are all works in progress, all of the time.

These guns although only 3 pounders are the same size at this scale as those used on the Winnie.   So its not any more or less difficult to rig them.  But it does add to the model at this scale.  And there are far fewer of them.

Which is nice.

Enjoying following your blog on Speedwell, she is coming along very nice. I was noticing that both tackles were singles, so because of these guns being lighter in weight and caliber they wouldn't need the one tackle connecting to the hull as a double like you demonstrated on Winnie. Is this the correct understanding??

Just singles.  The guns were too small for needing doubles.  Those were only used on bigger guns.  The winnie only used singles on the guns as well.

Im not sure where you got the idea that doubles were used.  They are only used on the biggest guns.  The winnie has 12 pounders which would only have used singles also.

I know that at least by the end of the 18th century single double combos were in use for 12pdrs. For 9pdrs and below it would only be singles. Not sure how applicable this is to the mid 18th century. The following table is the sizes I found from ADM 160/150. Obviously this is general allocation of stores information and any given ship may have differed:

Thank you...That is a bit later than for Speedwell.  My preference... I always use just singles based on my sources for all guns below 24 pdr.
