If you decide to put down some planking just on or two strakes should be enough  I thi that would accentuate the model and show off your workmanship.  Well done.

I think you may be right there. So much so that I've decided to plank the stern and bow areas and also add one or two deck strakes as you've suggested. The reason being that it's not just for aesthetic reasons that I should do it, but, also because the additional planks will provide increased structural rigidity to attach the rigging to. Without it, there'd be hardly any deck to attach the rigging to.

I'll post some photos later on!

Hi David and everyone

 

Well, as mentioned in my previous post, I've taken the advice of David (and heavily influenced by Dennis' earlier comment about the deck) and decided to add more deck planking.  The problem has always been a compromise between how much deck to leave exposed in order to facilitate viewing, as opposed to how much should be planked for aesthetic reasons.  Common sense prevailed and I've decided to plank the bow and stern decks, whilst leaving the remaining deck exposed wherever practical.

Hi everyone

 

Many thanks, as always to everyone who posted comments and Likes, i.e. Igor, Lawrence, Dennis, Matija, Mike, David, Cap'n'Bob, John and Row, etc!  They're all greatly appreciated.

 

Well, Rainbow's interior inches closer to completion.  Tonight I finished the navigation station which is occupied by the navigator when racing.  I've tried to show the navigation station in the photos below, but it's so small that'd you'd have to take my word for it! Trust me, it's there...it consists of a navigator's bench, a slanted work desk and some sundry shelving on the bulkhead wall above the slanted desk.

 

On the stern deck, Rainbow has a large hatch, which eventually will be glued in the upright position to show the interior of the stern.  at the moment, it's just temporarily shown in the upright position.

Hi everyone!

 

Many thanks for all your Likes and comments! They're all gratefully appreciated.

 

Last night was a milestone for two reasons. Firstly, I glued the deck to the hull (too bad if I left any detail off-oops!) because it'd be too late to add any internal stuff now. Secondly, I started to paint the hull - gloss black above and Matt red below the waterline. Whilst there's lots more painting, sanding and cleaning up to go (note the bleeding of paint where black meets red and on the gunwales above deck), before I can move onto other things like the mast, etc, but, at least two milestones have been met.

Hey Patrick, I'm at a loss for words, which is rather unusual for me    She's just looking awesome.  Your little paint problem can be fixed. For such a small scale I would use large "sticky notes."  The paper is thin and leave a sharp demarkation line and they peel off rather easily.  Yea, you'll have to sand the edges and repaint it but that's a minor chore.

That's a great idea about the post it note pads! I was using masking tape, but as you can see it still bled through. Perhaps I hadn't pressed the tape down hard enough, but it's okay because I still have at least a couple more coats to do before I'm satisfied with the finish-it has to be 'glass smooth' to replicate the mirror gloss of the real boat.

 

I'm going to get the post it note pads as you've suggested and hopefully I'll have better luck.

Awesome model! Have you tried tamiya masking tape? I used it when painting my bluenose and found it to be really good. Another option maybe...

Coincidentally, I did see the Tamiya tape at the Model Shop some weeks back, but, of course, I never though I'd ever need it. Ah well, I'll try the post it note pads which

I bought earlier today.

Piet - unfortunately, the post it note pads didn't work because it couldn't bend sufficiently around the curvature at the stern. In the end, it was easier to use the masking tape (it was too late to buy the Tamiya tape that Nick suggested).

 

Hopefully, it'll work better this time and I'll post more photos later.

I have always found that when using masking tape I give the the surface a shot of the same colour that I am masking first to make sure that if any bleeds happen then at least they are the same colour as that which I am masking.

 

Next I coat  the colour that is the new one.

 

When the paint has flashed off, while it is still soft I peel the tape back as close to the surface as possible without touching it to avoid lifting any of the soft paint.
