I've finished the two 20mm guns needed for the 5th deck. These have turned out a LOT better than the ones I made a few weeks ago . Here are a few pics of progress on them. They are ready for paint :

 

This time I assembled them the right way around, so I could fit the Spent Cartridge Baskets :

Thanks Carl, I'm starting to get the hang of working with PE .

 

Speaking of PE, I've made the Main Battery Gun Control one. It's only two parts, but no instructions whatsoever of it's construction are in either the kit or the PE sheet. Luckily I have the 3D Bismarck book to fall back on. The PE is a reasonable facsimile :

Thanks for all the very kind comments guys, and also for all the "Likes". Much appreciated .

 

If you notice any bent (or totally squashed ) railings - please ignore them. They bend at the slightest accidental touch, but are very easy to straighten out again. I'll be doing that at the end of the build, as I don't want to overstress them too much in case they break. I'll also touch them up at the same time.

You only get one chance to correct them, and they shouldn't be bent to much, else they snap anyway, so be carefull ... I've already snapped "some" PE on my build, fortunately I have several spares ...

Not true Carl, I've bent and straightened some of them at least 6 or 7 times without any sign of them snapping - YET. However, I don't want to push my luck any more than I have to . It might depend on the brand of PE, yours may be a bit more brittle.

It is startting to remind me of Martanek's buid of the Fuso.

A comparable ship (Italian) from the same period. He did it without PE, and did wonders with "just" copper wire and paper.

 

But the priciple was the same: each time we were thinking it couldn't get smaller and/or more crowded, more details were added. I like these models a lot.

I've seen Martanek's Fuso, and he's also building (built?) Bismarck, Yamato, Scharnhorst, Tirpitz and Hood simultaneously. That guy's from another planet - unbelievable detail . He hasn't posted any updates on his build log in Papermodellers for quite a while now, I wonder why?

Martanek is a unicorn.

I don't know. He left msw as there were to few papermodellers, but he seems to have left all fora. Perhaps other life-events became more important, or he decided that posting the same stuff over and over again were not so much fun as the building itself. Who knows, he didn't leave any 'goodby-messages'.

I think I know where he is, on a Czech site . Probably easier in his native language, plus there are a lot of Czech paper modellers.

1. is correct. Martanek's nick-name means "Little Martian".

so no, Martanek is no unicorn...

I've nearly completed the Bridge Deck. This time I cut out the windows and "glazed" them with thin acrylic :

 

The railings were a bit tricky . You may notice one has been cut a bit short (slip of the cutters ). It's more work to fix than it's worth, as it'll pretty well disappear when the mast etc goes on. Paint touch-ups will be done later :

I really like your cut-out windows, Danny.  You might be able to fix the railing by holding it vertically and running a tiny bit of half-dried epoxy between the points.

Thanks for the suggestion John, but it's really not a problem. They are all CA'd in already and are quite easy to straighten out again. I've bent virtually every railing I've fitted to three ships and they've all finished up OK .

 

EDIT - ah, you mean the piece I accidentally cut off. I might try your idea.

Sorry, you're right ofcourse. Got them mixed up.

(only thing I can't remember (and not check as it was before the crash of MSW1): Martanek had a fairly extensive buildlog here: was it the Japanese Fuso of the Italian Roma?)

The Bridge Deck and lower columns are finished. There were a few small details to make for either side. Small units like this take longer than some of the more substantial ones :

 

With all the details above the deck installed I could now glue on the lower part of the column, and add the support girders :

There are a pair of 4-Barrel 20mm Guns on the next deck, so I've made them both. There were none of these in the PE cards, but they were supplied as laser-cut. It was a full day's work to make them. Here are the parts for both guns, and the very sparse instructions :

 

About half of one gun completed :

 

And both of them finished and ready for paint. I used four of the spare handwheels from one of the PE sets to replace the plain round ones in the laser-cut :

It was Fuso. I think Doris built Roma, but never posted the log anywhere. That was before she was active on forums.
