Thank you Denis 20211028_215123.thumb.jpg.e20f019d1e61a9cedc7b0f2291cdb2be.jpg

antenna duly cut off while filler applied, dried and sanded, some minor rivet detail lost, I will try to replicate them with tiny dots of CA.

The antenna was glued back.

As I was sanding the filler, the wing hinges snapped, (the kit plastic is quite soft) and the outer wing sections fell off.🤨🥺

20211028_215419.thumb.jpg.8df35807da56ad5a13fe9114d8ea99a5.jpg

the uppermost part was carefully removed and the hinge stub drilled and a brass pin inserted and glued, a corresponding hole was done in the other part the pin pushed through and bent over and again glued.20211028_215150.thumb.jpg.152a40f362d530b6827db773e7522e9d.jpg

Hopefully this will give it a bit of sturdiness.

Thanks all for looking in etc...

Cheers

Very nice progress Edward. You've come a long, long way to get this far.

This is a kit I have seen on the hobby shop shelf many times in the past but have never owned or tried to build one. As a consequence I cannot offer any specific comment on the quirks of the build but it looks as though you are figuring it out quite well. Most of my best work came on my 2nd attempt on kits I really liked. The first one provided a basic training of sorts and the second kit allowed the improved techniques learned from the first.

A small update, not a lot of progress. Painted the engine,  the instructions say to use steel colour, I've not got steel so l  used flat aluminium, with a citadel armour wash20211031_154157.thumb.jpg.902c49c3066578cc16b091c8e2a2aca8.jpg

the other parts are dark iron.20211031_154136.thumb.jpg.08849f547ea2ce9eaabad586d8f60424.jpg

also made a mask for the canopy and painted the framework20211031_154040.thumb.jpg.fa14c526398fbc3640d304c358b560d2.jpg

Well, according to my Aunt, the cylinders were made of cast aluminum in the first place.... Dark cast aluminum would be appropriate, the fins were cut into the casting on a special lathe.... But making that distinction would be difficult....

Hi, if you want to bring up the details of the cylinders, you might try to touch the fins with a fine brush loaded with Tamiya black liner. Capillarity should pull the ink into the slots between the fins. If you do not have that product at hand, you might try black aquarelle out of the tube diluted with water. Adding a drop of dish soap to the water, will break the surface tension of the water and the color will run better into the slots.

Good progress with your big Corsair.

Best regards,

Dan.

yea....folding wings and such makes the model all the more delicate.  for myself,  I've only been able to adequately repair a couple......the others I simply abandoned the idea and fixed the wing,  attempting it again on another model.   in my younger days,  I had a lot of models on the shelf ;)

looking good......love the repair job with the gap  :)

Well, it's been a while since I worked on this one.

I'm hoping to get a bit of colour on her and get the wings fixed on20221008_220443.thumb.jpg.9765fb070c9953ad911bb499e57dcfc7.jpg

I'm thinking something similar to this one1480238550_04_fs(2).jpg.d740ef8c4cffcd68a52fc0ecec693f8b.jpg

A bit of colour on her20221013_212642.thumb.jpg.744483ea10459e4667e5fcc132782975.jpg

first coat of sea blue.

I'm waiting for some acrylic putty to be delivered and the wings will be attached and then get another coat on.20221013_212630.thumb.jpg.729ec2cb575f2f4e0304bcc31144a1cd.jpg

this is Mig/ammo sea blue, it's not as flat as the same colour by tamiya.

Just a little update, I've had a bit of a practice run on the transition of the colours. 20221016_123238.thumb.jpg.d039d1d4882e476a56e95419c3aab4dc.jpg the engine cowl was the perfect practice piece. 20221016_123247.thumb.jpg.d78ce0163343d7283d3ec6543c50b967.jpg

this was a freehand experiment, with no masking. Between the two blues I have touched it up with a brush. From the white to intermediate blue it's left as was sprayed.

I'll be interested in your opinions, for or against, any suggestions as to wether there are better methods to achieve a softer line between colours will be gratefully received.

Thanks for the likes and interest.

Hi Edward,

For a fuzzy edge, as I don’t have the requisite airbrush skills, I would still mask, but lift the paper mask off the surface by use of small blobs of blu-tac to allow some under spray. You’d have to experiment a little to find the height of mask you need for a given “fuzz”.

Is this kit the the old Matchbox one, rebranded?

nice work!

Nope it's the venerable Revell corsair, builds into a great model, but it's still the old Revell corsair.... (just reboxed to Revell of Germany)

had to stop as I'm having trouble with the airbrush clogging up. So it's having a full clean with the parts soaking in cleaner fluid.

Airbrush clogs most usually come down to the ratio/mix of paint to thinner. With acrylic paints, a flow improver additive is sometimes needed to stop needle tip drying. Play with your mix ratios on scrap until you find the correct mix. It's a problem that happens to all of us, particularly when you go from one brand of paint to another because each have their own peculiar quirks it seems to me.

That soft line between colors came out really well.  Nice job on this one!

As much as I like using Vallejo, I have issues at times with the nozzle getting clogged.  Flow improver and thinner help a lot.  Also, make sure you really clean your airbrush.  Vallejo I think leaves a trace amount of clear residue that you might not see.  So, you think you have your airbrush cleaned out (needle, nozzle, etc.), but it's still a bit clogged.  I try to remember to spray water to test if the nozzle is clogged before filling the paint cup, but I forget sometimes and it's a pain to then have to dump the cup, and really clean things out if it's clogged.  Using something like a bit of lacquer thinner will really clear things out.  It could also be older paint that has just clumped a bit.

I thought I was having the same problem this morning. I would get a short puff of paint from the sir brush and then hardly anything. I cleaned the nozzle a number of times and then gave up and stripped the airbrush and cleaned it. After three cleanings it still wasn't getting any better. It was then that I noticed that I had somehow accidently screwed the shut off valve in the quick disconnect almost fully closed. 😁

That's actually a very very good match.... And the only place you will see it without panels removed.... And, after mid '43, they went to hard shell gloss white for all landing gear bays... It was easier to spot and clean up the hydraulic leaks...
