    Sorry about the aluminum mesh but you'll work it out. Seeing this equipment come together is fascinating for someone like me who never was aboard one of these workhorses. And your explanations really fill out the bill.

    Thanks all! FRANK - you're not THAT old! Bob- Not as neat as yours but I'm getting there Rusty - Thanks for the good news! But then I'm pretty handy at making supposedly straight things curved (not to mention my patented 87 degree right angle) John - That planking was stained, then drilled/filled and then re-stained. Does that clarify????

    Time for a small update. The treenailing of the upper hull is completed. I used the 'drill and fill' method using a #74 bit and wood filler that I dyed with acrylic paint to the color I liked. It's not as aggressive a pattern as specified on the plans but it suits me. Once that was done, another coat of diluted Minwax Golden Oak stain was applied and everything given 2 coats of WOP followed by an application of brush on Testor's Flat Acrylic. Now it's time to finish the painting on the upper hull. Everything from approx. 2 strakes above the gun ports up to the rail will be black. Wish I had a scale roller . Probably take about 8 coats. Be back soon.

    That's a LOT of progress. Treenails look good, copper looks good, caulking is fantastic! By all means, write things down.....even just little notes as a reminder for similar operations 3 years down the road. Nice work, Meredith.

    You might check the fly fishing section of your local sporting goods store. They usually stock very small nail clippers that are quite sharp. Dr. Slick is one brand I recall.

    Glad to hear there are still some 'old-schoolers' out there. Nothing wrong with good power tools though --- especially if you're making a jump into scratch building. Upgrading your timber is a good investment Harley. It's a little expensive and hence, in the long run those tools pay for themselves. As they say.....whatever floats your boat!

    The only power tools I have are an old Dremel and a pencil sander. Never really got into that aspect and at my age I'd be dead before I ever learned how to use them properly. My wife of over 40 years is convinced 'there is something wrong with you'
