Zyxuz, I just caught up with your log. There's some very nice work going on here. The wales and lighting are making this ship special. Very impressive build.
-
I think you could pull that one off. As I recall they were made of tubing? Maybe just use some styrene. If you can't find plans, use pictures. you can probably scale your rack from a known object in the picture.
-
Tim, Make some is the easiest answer. Use dowel of the appropriate size and work from there. Or... check with your local hobby store for model railroad barrels. You might need to take a small ruler with you as I'm sure that it'll take some poking and measuring around to find something the right size.

Ray, The planking is very well done from what I can see. Pity they can't put better wood in the kit. I love those two last pictures. There's a real difference in ship sizes.

There's only one buildlog I can find: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/801-usrc-ranger-by-trippwj-corel-164-scale/ You might ask Wayne (trippwj) who's building it.

Thanks everyone. Augie, I don't know about a lot of water.. but since the French didn't use the chain pump, these were needed. Sjors, That's Pierre, the shipyard manager.

Thanks for looking in John and Lawrence. Seven pump housings and 10 spears later... I'm ready to fix them into place. The photo is just for position only. I went with cherry on the spears as think that once they age some and darken up, they'll provide a nice contrast. I'm still debating on putting the operating ropes on the two aft ones. Now to start figuring out the capstan...

Karl, You're off to a great start. This will be interesting to watch and also see the masting take shape.

I think many of us went through that "re-training" in school. Mine didn't take so I'm a lefty with ambidextrous tendencies and the handwriting of the doctor's prescription . Last I heard they don't try to change a kid's dominant hand. Less confusing to the kid. I pitch and write left, bat and golf right and can work most power tools with either.

Could be millimeters. Take a piece that's on the drawing of a known size and measure using the metric ruler. The other alternative is check in the kit logs and see if there's someone building her.
-
Sjors, I agree... take a break. Go work on the other ship.. drive a bus... just do something else. You and Mirage will be better off doing that. When you come back to Mirage, you'll fix what needs to be fixed and feel better for it.

Augie, Have a tall cold one, stand back and admire your work... and the work of the spiders. Well done, sir.

NIce fix on a real head-scratcher, Hamilton. Looks like you bagged it. Frankie: I Googled and here's two links. The second seems to have a more rounded answer. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Softly%2C%20Softly%2C%20Catchee%20Monkey http://nodtonothing.blogspot.com/2007/05/softly-softly-catchee-monkey.html

Freezer Paper - an awesome tool
mtaylor replied to Mahuna's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Good tip, Frank. Is this paper something from a hobby/craft store? I've not heard of it before. -
Thanks B.E. I saw two pages on the web and they were different. One was modeled in metal, the other in wood. I don't have Boudriot's books on the 74...my bad. I'll be making them from wood then since this breaks the tie. Seems this is one area that most of the reference works I've seen overlook on the French ships.

Norman, Welcome to MSW. Just another hint: If the measurement is something like "2,5".. replace the comma with a decimal point. Anja gave you great advice. Browse or search the kit build logs or the Trition cross-section to get a feel for what you'll be building.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
