My method for making sails: I have a sewing machine that I have never used. When I get around to finishing the Victory I’ll learn how to use a sewing machine.
-
Fore and aft sails templates test fitting: I adjusted the jib sails a bit to allow a bit for variation due to rescaling errors. I still need to make a template for the fore top sail. The rigging is one of my favorite parts of the model. Detailing/fitting out the hull is my other favorite part.

I think that Hannah is ready for sails and the running rigging. I do not think that I have missed anything. I do know that next time I need to plan out the running rigging better. If I am going to use one of the plans from the Hahn books or an AOTS, then I need to study a better belaying plan, or generate my own, and plan accordingly. Thankfully, this was a schooner and not a larger warship. I need to install deck blocks BEFORE I put in masts and standing rigging. Oops. Oh well, lol. We will call this one a lesson learned. I share it to help others avoid making the same mistake. On to sails!

The jib stay is back up: The standing rigging is back to being finished. Time to finish installing the rest of the blocks for the running rigging. Then, it will be time to make sails!

Thank you all for stopping by. I’m mostly moved in now and Hannah is in my new workshop. Hannah took minor damage during the move. She popped a jib stay. Repairing that will be my first order of business.

Anyone out there working on a card model?
GrandpaPhil replied to gagliano1770's topic in Card and Paper Models
I like card models. It is a very versatile medium, that bashes in well with other mediums. You should look at Doris’s and Ab Hoving’s card models. They are phenomenal. -

For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale
GrandpaPhil replied to ccoyle's topic in New member Introductions
We are always our own worst critic. My first hull that I planked was terrible. That’s actually the most difficult part of a model for me. This is a great place to learn. -

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
