Short update...

 

Well I dropped her, yep, she slipped right outta my hand and flopped on the table... OUCH!!!

 

Fortunately, I used the metal main gear they didn't break and gel CA to attach them, easy fix....

 

I'm doing a short update now in preparation for attaching the tanks and speed brakes...

A bit out of focus but you get the idea....

 

I'm gonna try to get them and the landing gear doors on tonight... Therefore tomorrow I can finish her and work on the setting...

Thanks Mark, I dodged a bullet with that one... But it is a pretty solid model, I'm glad I decided on the metal landing gear, it's what saved me...

Thanks Brother... The Aires AM set for the doors are pretty spot on for the pics of the insides of the speed brakes, and it revealed an error on the kit, the doors of the kit are too long by about 2 scale inches... You don't see it when open so if your going to build this with closed doors use the kits doors, open, use the Aries set.... 

 

The Aires set uses a PE plate for the inside stiffener of the door leaving the lightening holes in their proper places and the slot for the hydraulic cylinders are scaled appropriately as well... The surface was painted with a very thin coat of Testors chrome silver and then sealed with future... That gave them the proper reflectance of bare aluminum which comes out in the photos...

 

The greenish tint you see on the inside surfaces is the shine picking up the color of the build mat they are above and the interior green of the bay insides... True reflectance... A technique I learned many years ago...

 

Your opinion tells me that I got it right....

Another short update :

 

Details Details, Details....

 

The cables for the ammo door...

The main landing gear doors were a lot more of a pain that I though they were going to be...

 

And then of course the wing fillet that is removed when on the ground so the pilot can climb in and out of the aircraft... On McConnell's aircraft it hung by a cable off the wing root where it attached... (On most there was no cable and they just sat it on top of the wing) But since this is a specific aircraft It has to have it....

 

And of course right side up...

And here it is the last publicity shot of the aircraft showing the wing root hanging... (this was after McConnell was on his way back to the states and they repainted his aircraft, notice the stars instead of the falling migs victory symbols)

Getting close to completing the subject and soon will be doing the field equipment... Still not quite sure what I'm going to have but it will be period at least....

Well Brothers, probably the last photo spread before I finish the airplane portion of this excursion... Outside on a nice sunny day....

 

Small details left, probably a half days work and I can start in the base setting for it...

They always look better in real sunlight...

 

I've decided in a typical flight line setting marston matting, (which I will have to design and print) 50's Power Cart and the Clarktor tractor and maybe a sandbag wall... I I haven't decided on that for sure yet...

Generally they didn't use revetments like they did in Vietnam, the flight line was a long strip of matting with usually a sandbag wall along one side, on an active flightline all you would usually see is a start cart, a tractor with tow bars and a portable fire extinguisher...

 

Still sorting that out....

 

Anyway, tell me what you think...

Suggestion:

 

For greater depth of field aka depth of focus, take the camera out of Auto mode and select Aperture Preferred mode, designated as Av on most camera dials. Choose an aperture of f/16 or higher, e.g., f/22, f/32,  (my Pentax DSLR will go to f/32), leave the ISO setting on Auto, it might select ISO 3200, make sure the shutter speed it selects is 1/50 sec or higher, if you are not using a tripod or the deck railing, e.g., 1/125, 1/250, etc. I think your camera has Center Weighted and Spot metering and Center Weighted and Spot focus, if so select them also.  Experiment a little, it's digital so no wasted film to worry about. Just delete the bad ones. 😉  You're shooting in bright sunlight so plenty of light.  Remember the higher the f/nn value, the smaller the diameter of the aperture and the greater the depth of field/focus, the lower the value the bigger the diameter and shorter depth of field.

Thanks for the suggestion Jack, I tried them on the model sitting on my desk....

That's a huge improvement in depth of field...  I just set the ISO to f16 and took a few just to see what it did... It darkened the shot a bit but not outside of reasonable, the other settings I've got to dive into the book to find out how to set them... I just snapped these like it was a Point N Shoot... 

 

I guess I'm going to have to learn a bit about this camera... I know it takes beautiful pics but if I learn something about how to use it the pics will come out even better...

BTW Some camera terms

ISO ( or ASA in the old days) is a measure of film speed or sensitivity to light. The higher the number the more sensitivity or as we used to say "speed".

 

F-stop is the ratio of the cross sectional diameter of the aperture to the focal length of lens, expressed as f/nn , e.g. f/16, f/22, as the number goes up, the diameter decreases allowing less light to pass thru, as the number go down the diameter increases allowing more light to pass thru. As you go from one F-stop to another the amount of light passing thru increases/decreases by a factor of 2. So going from f/8 to  f/11 ( or from f/16 to f/22)  you let in 1/2 the light, reversing and going from f/22 to f/16 (or from f/11 to f/8) you let in 2x the light.  So f/8 on a 50mm lens is the same as f/8 on a 300 mm lens, only difference is the aperature diameter. 

 

Aperature - think Iris of your eye. 

 

Same factor applies to shutter speed.  f/8 at 1/250 sec is the same exposure as f/11 at 1/125 sec.

Or have your own darkroom.  I did and it was always a matter of holding my breath while developing the negatives as color film had quite specific temperatures and times for developing.

Yea, took the family on a 3 week drive from NY to Colorado,  Wyoming,  South Dakota and back visiting, Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain National Park,  Estes, Yellowstone,  Tetons,  Rushmore,  Badlands et al. Left with 36 rolls of 36 exposure Kodachrome 200, ran out midway thru Yellowstone, had to buy 10 rolls of 36 exposure Ektachrome 200. Ran out of that too by the time we go home. Of course back then film & processing was cheapest part of trip.

 

Sorting thru them was a fun time.

I still have mine. But after several failed attempts at developing and printing color film, decided it was cheaper to let Kodak do the color and concentrated on doing B&W in the home darkroom.

I agree on having someone else do the film as the commercial places were very uniform.  Color prints weren't bad when I was doing it but this was back in the '80's... and suddenly I feel very old.

I never managed colour prints. I did a lot of black and white and some printing from slides (Cibachrome paper? It was wickedly expensive). Still got the dev tanks and timer along with the projector

Sounds like a great trip Jack.

I did a three week climbing trip in the Karakorum years ago and only had space for ten 36 exp rolls of Kodachrome. Careful rationing needed especially as you never knew what the next bend in the valley would bring.

It was exciting seeing those yellow boxes come through the letter box

I also took a lot of caving photos and got resigned to throwing an entire box of slides in the bin when they came back from processing

For me it was the best way.  I was doing photos at the local drag track and needed to be able to do up to 16X20 at a reasonable cost. Doing it myself was the only option.

Thank you Jack, when I get some good weather for pics I'll be taking advantage of your very kind offer... The manual on this camera is two things thick and very technical... I invested in a for Dummies book on this model and it's 5/8ths of an inch thick as well...

Now you see back in the day when I was young I started out on the wrong foot, it seems modelers start as photographers first, and I never got into that... (couldn't afford it, chuckle) so as a late bloomer, and as usual, doing things backwards from what seems to be the normal way of doing things, you all have a neophyte photographer here...

Thanks Mike, taking my time, investing a lot more than I initially intended on this one... it's worth it I think, especially with the memories it brings back for some of the brothers... Well worth it...
