Chris,

I’d start a separate thread for this, you’re going to get inundated as all Aubrey fabs start dusting off their books and sift them for clues as to what she looked like according to O’Brian 😁

Gary

Early days :) She will have a full suite of 3-d printed ships boats. I will not add the 36 gun frigate main mast (Surprise was a relatively small frigate, really a corvette, being no larger than the 32 gun Amazon Class from the 1770's), so the only real change will be the guns.

It will be based off the original lines, and not the Rose from the film, as Rose was a lot smaller than the real Surprise.

I agree, in this instance, given the popularity of the subject and the fact that fans of Surprise have been waiting for over two decades for this announcement. I suspect such a thread will attract a lot of attention. I'd be happy to split the relevant posts off into a new topic for you, @chris watton.

Yay!!!!!

Is there a new thread to follow?

Great that you’re making it true to the actual Surprise/book version, not the Rose, though I bet some commenter will take exception.

I care nothing about tables or sloths, glad for long guns. I’ll be on the first buy list.

Glenn

I will definitively be one of the first on the buy list, frigates are my favorite vessels and like many the Surprise has a special place, the Master and Commander movie is what really kicked off my love for the age of sail, and one of my favorite memories of my youth is seeing the movie in theaters with my dad and brother when I was in high school.  I've been reading the books and I get a smile every time the Surprise appears.

So my 18th kit will be a 64th scale model of HMS Surprise - This is definite, and will start work on this immediately.

The model will be of the fictional version, so long guns instead of carronades.

Shut the front door! 🚪 🤣

We're going to do something a little different. We'll start a log which will show you some of the design processes as they move along, culminating in the prototype build.

Very cool! The design process fascinates me also :)

By the way...cool profile picture James :D

That will be very interesting to follow, what an excellent idea

this will be on my Christmas list for sure.

I may be opening a can of worms here but how do you navigate copyright in this instance?  Its a ship that isn't fictional, but the author's imagined ship kind of is.  Replacing carronades with long guns isn't too controversial, but other details (like the enlarged mainmast which I know you are not including) theoretically could be.

Also i am very interested in following along the kit development process.  Its like magic how fast you develop your kits from scratch!  I'm inching along on my 2nd kit build and after 2 years have almost made it to main deck furniture.

Hi Chris, so where does the Surprise decision put the Bristol in the order of things to come? :)

Bristol is still and will always be a definite.

I just had my new machined walnut block sets for Sphinx arrive, so these are back in stock:

HMS Sphinx Machined walnut Block Set – VANGUARD MODELS

Also, my large shipment of PE copper for Indy, Speedy and Harpy arrived last week, after a 2 year wait (for the Indy and Speedy copper PE)!

ETA - here is the Speedy and Indy specific copper sheets, these are extras that will go with the standard PE copper tiles, just need to add the stock...

What a surprise...!

I know its not the real thing but I got to see the movie ship back in 2012 when I was visiting San Diego.

I just looked at the old Caldercraft project of Surprise. Not sure why they never finished it. I remember being very excited about that release but seeing the photos now it looks very dated and undetailed.

It will be really interesting to see what you will come up with. I am sure you will do her justice.

Current builds: HMS Victory (Corel 1:98), HMS Snake (Caldercraft 1:64), HMBV Granado (Caldercraft 1:64), HMS Diana (Caldercraft 1:64), HMS Speedy (Vanguard Models 1:64)

Can you already estimate when you will put the sheets up for sale.

I seem to always pick the ones with odd pump arrangements.

For Surprise, should I go with a typical chain pump and housing config, or, as seems to be the case with the original plans, 3 hand pumps per side?

Anyone got any better diagrams for this?
