No major milestones but time for an update.

 

Planking continues.  The mishap with the flying paint jar on the port side was eradicated by removing most of the planking on that side, including 2 of the simulated sheaves, and starting over:

 

 

The starboard side is at the same point.  All of the sweep port openings and gun deck gun ports are completed:

 

 

I'll be working my way up to the forecastle and QD with the planking.  Then a good sanding before I add the second layer of planking to the main and channel wales.

Good pics Augie, she looks crisp and clean....I know from reading ahead on the Syren the gunport thing is much more complicated than what I am used to. Expect lots of questions when I get there!

Gee, maybe I should rip it off and do it still again!!!!  No, I'm tired of notches.  I know Wes mentioned in a recent update (on his beautiful hatches for his Connie) that he had cut some slivers down to 1mm.  I got a couple at 0.8  

 

John-  I'm a thick CA guy when it comes to planking.  Easy to handle, neat and doesn't penetrate right through the wood (in this case, basswood).  Holds like iron after 30 seconds so there's no fooling with clamps.  One or two copious applications of acetone will soften it enough to remove a plank.  Then a sharp exacto blade, a little sanding, brute force and superstition and you're back to square one.  Oh, make sure to extinguish the 'smoking lamp'.

 

Thanks for all the well-wishes.  Hoping to get back to a normal pace now.  Frankly, November was a month I'd just as soon forget.

Have you ever tried hot melt for planking? I know that sounds goofy but it is what I used for my Victory bow section. They were shorter planks for the most part but if one can stand the heat(the glue does burn fingers for a sec.) it certainly holds .....

 

Thick CA is also in my array of adhesives.

i tend to use too much glue and PVA wipes of easy, but it would certainly cut down on the waiting game with the thick CA

Terrific recovery Augie! The planking is looking great! The Confed really has nice lines that are becoming more defined with each section of planking!

I only mentioned the thick CA because John asked.  Like anything else, be VERY sure to try it first before you commit to using it on your pride and joy.  And remember you need to have your subject plank pre-bent and spiled (if necessary) so that it is really ready to go.  There is zero time available for playing around.

 

One last thing (and here I risk an avalanche of 'heresy' comments), I really believe the thick is less volatile and emits less fumes so it might be less irritating for those sensitive to CA vapors.

Thanks for the advice on the thick CA Augie. I generally avoid using CA at all if I can, as I'm one of those affected by the fumes. I might try giving the thick stuff a go to see if it makes a difference (fume-wise).

Well done, Augie.  And good advice on pre-bending the planks.   Ok.. Novemeber is like over in 30 some hours so you only have to hold out for a bit longer.  December will be better.

Hmmm thick set CA.....I know I am hyper sensitive to the stuff and try to avoid it all costs because I know I will be down for 2-3 days after the first whiff of fumes. I did break down and purchase a painter's respirator mask with filters for chemicals....I am guessing that the reason behind the CA is you can move rather quickly on the planking?

I am not sure I am confident enough in my planking abilities to give that a try....yet

PVA is a lot easier to work with Robbyn.  And more forgiving.  I'm just used to using the CA's from my airplane work.

The planking is looking really good.   One thing to watch is when you are ready to place the second layer of the wales (both of them) on top of the first layer.  If your planking run isnt identical at the stern where the planks run off the hull,  dont just follow that first layer with the wales.  Make some adjustments on one side or the other so the wales are even port to starboard.  Should they not be even it will cause you some problems when trying to get the quarter galleries built and the PE decorations on.   The same is true at the bow when it comes time to make the headrails much later.

 

Try and measure down from the cap rail on both sides after taking the measurements from the plans.  You have a bit of wiggle room there if you need to adjust them to make them even.  Just giving you something else to worry about!!!! and I hope you find it helpful.

Thanks, Hamilton.  Planking up there is almost done now and they look even better.  I can't take credit for the idea...that was Chucks.  But Mobbsie did something similar on his Aggie and it's really a nice touch.
