Thank you everyone  for following  along. Today the First Mate  and I paid a visit to fellow member @Gabek,  It was a wonderful  visit.  Mrs Gabek made us some delicious bannock, it was fantastic.  Also Gabe and I did a little bartering,  for a bit of corn, 4 dozen, a bag full of cucumbers,  and a small box of Tomatoes,  he made me these correct  scale cannons, 20 of them and a stove that fits right into  place on the Pegasus.  Thank you !!!

 

  Time to finish the second layer of planks.  Then the copper.  I am doing a good job on the planks, go figure when all is said and done only 1/2 of and inch of planks show  on the ship.  After it is coppered then painted only a few planks show, lol. But at least it is  planked to the best of my ability as of to date lol.

 After I got home , I ran down to the shipyard, and took all of 5 minutes to clean and paint them all. Lol 

 So I put everything away for now,  going to do the  second layer of planking,  followed by  the copper, then finish a little more painting. Then start rigging the cannnos, lots of work there lol. Well that's it for now, I still can't  belive how much you have to change in the kit to make it look better.  You buy a kit at a good price then pay a good price to upgrade, oh well that's business I guess. Lol.

So with full intention to finish the second layer of planking,  I got side tracked.  As soon as I had the second layer on from the whales up , I  want to try out some colors I had  for this. The yellow  could be brighter I will  see on the starboard side,  I  will make it brighter then pick. It's only hand painted  just to see lol.

 

 

 Then I found a back up Pegasus  figure head, just in case the kit supplied  one does look good lol.

 I made my top capstan, with the holes for the pins and chains but decided not to make the chains up at this time lol.

The wheel looks good from four to five feet lol it'll do, lol. I have decided on how I think I want my Pegasus to look so here goes we will see. I can always repaint it.  Lol

Your wheel holds up to photo magnification. 👍 As for the yellow you may want to try a poly sealer semi gloss to brighten up the tone. Looks good. 👍

Well I got side tracked again,  lol, this time the life boat. I was getting ready to tackle the planking  and saw this  metal life boat,  so I looked at a lot of Pegasus logs, and 9 out of ten scraped the boat. 

   Well  every time you turn around on this ship you got to up grade, cannons, swivel  guns, stove, life boat, and I have to buy more blocks if it is rigged a certain  way, they don't  come with the kit. Sheees.

 Oh well, I can't keep buying  accessories,   So this is what I come up with for my life boat.

I open the plastic bag,  and ll this was inside. The little peice of instructions  didn't make sense.  There is no bell on the life boat, and these bars are for what.lol.

 Getting  some ideas  from the logs this is what I came up with.

 I got some oars that when sanded down will look pretty good  I think .

  Marvin tells me to put this all away and come back to it later, I agree lol. I really want to get at my planking but there  are way to many distraction.  And outside work is calling again 🙄,  but I am hard of hearing  lol. I do plan on putting the life boat away till later in the build, this was just fun to do and I like it.

On to the planking , lol, thanks for all the help and likes.

Planking has begun,  lol

Yes I reread the Linning off your hull by  @Chuck in the article data base,  and almost got this time. It is hard to do with out understanding math, reading better would help to , lol.

 But the planks are on  the port side.

I have some slight damage to the bow below the water line , it was done by clamps that were way to tight, it will be covered by the copper  . On a positive note,  my ship doesn't rattle yet lol.

 So on to the starboard side, one more try at getting it right .

 

I did change the yellow, from old English  ochre to Bright yellow, the first Mate says it looks better. Time will tell.

 I can't thank everyone enough for all the help I have been getting.  With out NRG and MSW  I would be lost.  

 I am deciding on how to proceed with the  copper. Some paint the hull copper below the water line,  to hide caps in the copper plates, more   Research is needed . They say a coat of paint covets a multitude  of mistakes, I am hoping that the copper covers  all of mine . It will be a week or so before I start  coppering,  so I have lots of time.

 Captain Marvin says" time to plank  the starboard side,  get it right this time or I am going to jump ship and join @Glen McGuire crew, where they are havin a BBQ,  Beer and Burgers  celebrating his fine competition  of his build.

 Bob, personally I don't like copper plating the hull as IMHO the copper plates look out of scale. If I were to ever build a model with a copper plated hull I'd paint it with copper paint and call it done. If you insist on plating I suggest copper tape. From reading several build logs with builders using both, the tape seems to apply easier with a better end result, once again IMHO. Your planking looks great.

Have a look at my HMS Fly log Blue Ensigns HMS Pegasus log - nothing wrong with copper if you get it right and when you do it looks great! I used copper strips - sort of like a tape but you can snap off the individual plates to tune it to the curves. I disagree with Keith, the scale is fine but you have get it right as once you start there is no going back. Other choice, if you don't want all natural, is paint in off white/cream. Unless the planking is immaculate, see Blue Ensigns logs (his planking is always immaculate), copper or paint hides all of the ills of us less skilled. I also used an unusual aging technique for my copper plating. The outcome looks good to my eye but it does need a leap of faith...

Hi Bob,

It is super that you went ahead with building your own ship's boat.  (There were no life boats back then 😀)  For the future and for those that may be building this kit there is a good set of scantlings for ships' boats available that can be found in Boats of Men of War and Scantlings of the Royal Navy.  Attached is the Excel version.   Note the breadth of the thwarts for example.  They would have been about 9.5" (0.15" at 1:64)  broad.  Looking at contemporary plans there is about a 21" (0.328" at 1:64)  space between them.  (There were variations over the years and regarding the type of boat, but 8 to 10 inches would be about right.) For a 14 gun sloop there were likely a 16 foot long boat or launch and a 24 or 25 foot pinnace.  In 1777 an 18 foot cutter may have been added.  These were probably all single banked, not double banked as the kit shows. There are a number of high resolution plans for various types of ship's boats on the WikiCommons site as well as a lot in low res on the RMG Collections site that may be of help as well.

Sorry about the delay,  a trip to the ER for my ticker , I am ok just to high reading of blood pressure, very high lol Plus the Grandson wanted this doneSo now the second planking is finished  🙌.  I did pretty good  this time.  I ended up having to put a stealers on the Bow and stern but it's  planked.

 

Because I did the Sea of Galilee boat the planks on that kit came pre tapered, I thought  that I would do the same so,

I tapered 10 planks and after the first three planks were on. Then started at the keel and work up. It worked out well  except for the stealers but they are under the copper. 

 

 

Now its on to the coppering.  @Keith Black I value your opinion very much, but I like shinny things lol I have no intention of using @aliluke method for his copper  lol sorry.  The shinnier the better  for me . I even intend on keeping it shiny  by polishing it yearly  lol. If it turns out well , if not I will scrape it all off and paint it white. So I am off to learn how to copper, I used my third hand and at the 60 mm mark  I drew the water line, I will tape it before I start. But I don't know when I get to that so I will leave it off till I start.

If you wind up doing a hull without copper or just leave it plain wood for any reason, there usually are no stealers at the bow, but there were sometimes drop strakes.  There were times when stealers were used aft which were to fill an open space where as the drop strakes forward were used because of too little space.  Hope this makes sense.

Coppering  has many ways of applying.  I have study the best I could, and came up with this plan.. Just follow the plan lol. So far I have 6 rows on. 

 I decided to use Super Phatic glue for the copper, you kinda use it like contact cement.  It is working well for me and they are sticking, for how long who knows lol. The  best part it is water clean up , which helps.  There are some more details at the top of the copper at the waterline I have to work out but I have plenty of time  lol.

So now it just a matter of following the pattern on the copper tiles till I get to the top. And much like my Ship in the Bottle  experience  once will be enough for the enjoyment of coppering  lol. It is fun, just time consuming.

When I join MSW about 2 an a half years ago I looked at the Pegasus and said oh I got to build one of those  copper bottom hull. Well I am into it, and it really is not that bad to do. This is how I am glueing them on. I am able to put two pieces on at a time. Frist  I glue the pieces making  sure to cover it all, then apply  the Phatic glue to the hull.

 The glue gives me just enough time to slide it into place, you can feel it stiffing up so you have to be ready.  After holding in place for a bit, I use my thumbs to   rub off most of the glue. After I have applied  about 10 or so peices  I go back over it all with a damp magic eraser, this leave a white ish film that is easily removed by a paper towel.

 Most of the peices so far required very little  cutting.  But as I get to nearer  to the water line I see there will be lots of cutting. 

 I glued on a strip of wood at the water line, then painted it black.  Then I took copper paint and painted  just below the water line to hide any small spaces that I am sure will arise lol. So this is how she looks today, next post will be when I finish  the starboard side  lol who know when that will be ,  but I am still having the time of my life, modeler for ever lol.
