  1. For myself, I tend to brush paint acrylics. It works well for me, but I learned to paint by painting 28mm war gaming miniatures. I use the exact same techniques on my ship models as everything else. I’m not trying to make my models look new and shiny though, I try and make them look battered, used, and old. It looks more real to me that way. I typically basecoat dark and then work to lighter colors. I usually ink (use thin downed paint, almost watery) and then dry brush to give depth to my models.
  2. I like using self-adhesive copper tape and making nail heads with a pounce wheel. I use a steel ruler to keep the lines straight. It worked great for my Victory and Prince de Neufchatel models.
  3. Welcome!
  4. I cut the curve into the tape and basically make my own mask.
  5. The figurehead is almost complete. I just need to paint the crown, make a piece of banner and a spacer piece, and do some touch ups. The heavy carving is done. I am very pleased with how it has come out so far.
  6. Personally, I like Delta Ceramcoat. That’s just my personal preference. It works well for me.
  7. The center piece is on. As with the rest of this project, it’s not perfect, but it’ll do. I need to make a spacer piece for behind the center piece. I am going to let everything dry and do more tomorrow.
  8. The center piece is primed. The first floral piece is carved and sealed. I’m not even going to try to carve the flowers. I’m going to speckle them in with paint in much the same way as I would make camouflage.
  9. Starboard side and the center shield piece. I did my best on the center shield piece, but the scale is tiny, so I apologize.
  10. Thank you. I’m trying. This has been a learning experience. I’m having a lot of fun learning, though. Maybe by the time I get through the Triton’s carvings, I will be good. I’m getting better and more confident with my carving skills.
  11. I’ve got the front piece in work and am getting ready to rough out the two pieces of floral design. I realized that those would probably be easier if made in two pieces.
  12. While trying to get the rest of the saying for the banner, I discovered that I painted the port side incorrectly. The sash should have been red. So, I repainted it.
  13. Here’s the top front piece, including the crown and the floral bouquet looking piece on the bottom. I’m going to try and make the crown as part of that front piece. If it doesn’t work, then I’ll make it separately. As campy as it sounds, I think I’m going to make the banner out of a piece of card and paint it blue with the saying on it.
  14. The starboard side carvings are carved, except for the banner which wraps around the bow. Once the glue dries on the piece I broke, I will seal the top piece and paint it.
  15. The first two pieces are on: Due to an imperfect understanding of the plans (I didn’t measure twice, oops), I trimmed away too much of the mouldings. That’ll have to be fixed later.
  16. The first three are painted and will be ready to install tomorrow! They’re not perfect, but they’ll do.
  17. I carved another piece of the figurehead. That’s definitely one of the more complex pieces that I have ever carved. It went better than expected. I have the port side made, except for the scroll work which goes across the bow.
  18. Thank you all for the likes and the comments! Here’s pictures of the bombard with the glue dry:
