Working on lining off the lower hull planking underway, my hull is somewhat different than Chucks so his supplied tick strips are not quite perfect but pretty close in my case.

I keep adjusting the belt lines to get the best overall flow to the hull and to make sure that the all important stem planking has a gentle upward slope that is so hard to get just right IMO.

I think I will be playing around with this for a few more days before I’m totally happy with it.

that looks pretty darn good Ben.  Extra time spent here will pay off many times over.   The most worthwhile investment in time for the entire project.

Thanks Chuck,

I agree with you on that, its one of the things on this build that I am going to "FORCE" myself to do better at than I have previously done on other builds.

Parallel tape can be visually deceiving. I'd recommend using black thread and white glue. It's easy to reposition the thread: moisten your finger and roll the thread up or down as needed. And remember to check the work right way up from all angles!

Had to clean off a little bit of casting flash and glue the arms on, starting to add some color, a very nice figurehead that Chuck supplies.

Managed to get back to my Winnie, I decided that I really want to learn how to line off the lower hull entirely to ensure my planking runs are good so I have taken Druxeys advice and will line off EVERY single planking run with black string so as to see how good I can do this, As Im back travelling for work all the time now this could take me a few weeks before I show any progress and Im still plugging away on Pegasus upper deck framing.

Watching you use string will be a great learning experience and I look forward to your updates. Travel safe!

So I have added lines for all the hull planking, you will be able to see where it differs from the original markings and I still have a LOT of tweaking to get it just the way I want it, especially at the bow,  this has been a big and time consuming learning experience for me that I had to go through and I will show more pics when I have finished adjusting and playing with it.

BTW - it’s almost all lined off with black thread but then I came across some 1/64” wide black graphic tape on Amazon that was the same width as the thread and is much faster to add and adjust than the thread, can you spot where I used it?

That's a great job lining her off. It will make the planking so much better.

I'm guessing upper three rows port side bow area?

Now I'm going to look for some for myself! Thanks

So I still wasn’t completely happy with the bow so I took the lines back to the 6th bulkhead and did some more fairing to the bow fillers and the first three bulkheads and I also tore off the drop planks and installed some narrower ones that match the other plank widths in the first belt, this really helped the flow of the planking in that gentle upwards curve after I lined back off again.

I believe I’m ready to start planking for real now, wish me luck.

That looks really good Ben, something I should have done and will do for sure next time. Especially with the drop plank, I’m starting to see issues with my forward plank ends that I don’t think I’ll be able to correct at this point.

looking forward to seeing your planks go down.

A really informative buildlog, Ben. I like your idea, to show some dummy frames.

Hello Ben,

This evening I sat down with a cup of coffee and finally read your build log.  I'm sorry it took so long to get around to it because you have a beautiful build going with all sorts of interesting additions.  I liked your idea of putting wheels on the Harbor Freight work table.  Your pear wood frame reveal with the shadow box is really eye catching.  I like your use of hardwoods throughout, especially the Gabon ebony wales.  You don't see the wood used as much for the wales anymore, but when it is used it really stands out.  Very nice, and classy looking.  That jet black ebony must have cost you a pretty penny.  I took notice of your plank bending station too.  Where did you get those two hold-downs?  Last but not least is your use of black string to insure good planking runs.  That's something I'll have to try.  Thank you, Ben.  It was a pleasure reading and seeing what you're doing.   I will, for sure, follow your build more closely.

Tom

Seems like forever since I had any modelling time available for the Winnie or Pegasus due to work and another more pressing project, but I pushed myself to start the lower planking up again, even if I can install a strake on each side a week it is at least some progress. Here is the first belt on both sides completed now and you can begin to see the frame window taking shape. Hopefully it wont be another 10 months before the next update.

Very nice. I like the „painting with wood“ approach and the little cut out with simulated frame structure.

Ben that looks fantastic.   Your lining off looks great....a really good example for others to look at when they start lining off their hull.   You can see every strake just as it will appear when finished.  That strategy will payoff in  the long run.
