Skinning the Engine Compartment

The front end of the Tiger Moth is kind of busy -- the fuselage sides may be flat, but the nose has plenty of curves going in different directions.

Pre-shaping the two forward skins is important.

tm16.thumb.jpg.0476453e29af54d9fa5db1741e82d1b2.jpg

I had to do some surgery to get one side to fit, but I think it turned out okay on that side . . .

tm17.thumb.jpg.32e1a9587a76f6c2fdb27b525c1ebc7e.jpg

. . . and on the other side . . .

tm18.thumb.jpg.58d982455f77890932ff8985b4a6be4d.jpg

. . . and finally from aft looking forward, which gives a sense of the flared nose panels.

tm19.thumb.jpg.f13fb496693271d7381aef8b3e9da0ac.jpg

Next up are the two windscreens, after which the fuselage will be set aside until all the sub-assemblies are ready to go together.

Slowly the empennage is coming together. Horizontal and vertical stabilizers + elevators completed (sans control horns for the time being), rudder pieces cut out and edge colored.

Upper Wings

The wing design includes two layers of skin, which makes it easier to obtain a nice, smooth exterior. Here are the lower first-layer skins and interior framing.

tm23.thumb.jpg.21603c00548d99b5b54ca26c272a091c.jpg

Upper first-layer skins attached. Exterior skins cut out and edge-colored.

Inner skins mated to outer skins.

All done!

Of course, it's a biplane,so I have to do this all over again for the lower wings. 🙃

You've gotten really good at these card models Chris.  Very impressive how you can get compound shapes to fit so well together.

Thanks, but much of the credit must go to the designer, Pawel Mistewicz. So far this has been a well thought-out kit. Also, this is the 18th card aircraft I have attempted (14 completed), so hopefully I have progressed up the learning curve a bit.

Lower wings ready for outer skins, and aileron pieces cut out as well. The DH.82 only had ailerons on the lower wings.

Wings done. Next up comes the hardest part of getting a biplane right -- mounting the wings and struts.

Ready? Here we go!

Step #1: struts

tm30.thumb.jpg.58b86bc1de3c469f154222c35a7d6675.jpg

Step #2: parasol monoplane 😋

tm31.thumb.jpg.5dcd65cc05597fdf6aa9ff2b8c2ccb6a.jpg

Step #3: biplane!

tm32.thumb.jpg.e0a7061fbfe3772fb9433ba3e6337a61.jpg

I may have to make judicious use of flattering angles for the eventual final photos. The right upper wing is skewed a tiny bit aft. I finally discovered the problem -- the locator hole for the lower right wing's pin is about 0.5-1.0 mm farther aft than that for the left wing! I'm not sure that I'll be able to do much about it at this late juncture, but we'll see.

Your Tiger Moth looks super-nice Chris!

For somewhere around-about $20, there is this wing-jig available on Ebay. It gives you a way to align everything near to perfect when assembling the wings and tail surfaces.

At this point, various factors are working against making much progress on the model. First there is, of course, holiday preparations -- tree-trimming, decorating, etc. Second is the fact that I will have family from out-of-town in this weekend, and hiding away in the man cave at such times is generally frowned upon. In the few moments I have had to work on the model, I have been attaching the diagonal bracing between the interplane struts (4 pieces). Three of them are done, but last night the fourth defeated all efforts to get one end properly secured, and at that point I thought it best to retire from the fight and live to model another day. I will post a picture once I get all the wing bracing done; the rest of it should go much better (hopefully).

the tiger is coming along nicely Chris!  perhaps you can adjust the pin on the wing to compensate.   really like how cleanly done she looks :)   what are those two protrusions back at the stabilizer wing?  I've not built one of these......curious ;)

I know what you mean.......between Thanksgiving and Christmas......don't know which is worse.  either I'm the cook's assistant,  or the chief decorator.  we just got our tree this afternoon.  tomorrow.........the inflatables,  and a jaunt for my oldest grandson's birthday

They're called anti-spin strakes. The name is self-explanatory. As for the bit of skew, because the struts have wire innards, I was able to twist the wing slightly and make the misalignment less apparent.

On another note, I was finally able to connect the irksome bit of rigging -- only took twenty attempts. 🤬

The wing rigging is done. I wanted to do this portion before tackling the landing gear, because it requires frequently turning the model over, and the gear would just be in the way. This portion went much easier because each line has pre-drilled insertion points that make gluing easier. The lines were set with CA and later given a daub of white glue to help prevent them from coming loose.

Same here.   Very nicely done.  Once the wheels are on, the pilot can land right side up.
