Im curious what did you use for the bulwark/bulkhead planking. Is that boxwood? What stain/oils did you use (assuming you havent already mentioned) the coloring is simply perfect ;)

Thanks Charlie,

The bulwark planks are Boxwood but were spray painted red acrylic when complete.  (An unbelievably tedious masking job) the frames are Cherry and the hull planking is Boxwood.  The Cherry was stained a slight red, more to keep it uniform than anything else but the Boxwood was left natural. The decks are Holly and those were left natural too.

That is one of the finest models I've seen in a long while Dan.

Lovely composition of the hull elements with the framing, planking and coppering. It would be easy for this to look like a novelty cut away but you've made it look like a class act.

Top work from keel to mast cap!

wonderful work, an inspiration to all that want to do better (like me)

I sent the last batch of photos off to the guy who is paying for it and am waiting to hear back. Judging by the response here, I may actually get away with it so thank you all for your kind words.

This morning after cleaning up the shipyard, I started a 2nd century Roman merchant vessel, waterline model 1/48 scale and a WWI US submarine, also waterline at 1/72 scale. Also soon due to start a 1694 British 6th rate hull model 1/48 scale.

I certainly can't say it's boring..!

Dan, the Boston frigate turned out great ..... beautiful workmanship!  Those are nice photos of the finished model.  Roman merchant vessel, WWI US submarine, and a 1694 British 6th rate?  Wow!  That's a lot on your plate.  I do hope you will be sharing with us their construction in build logs. ;-)  No doubt they would attract a strong following.  My Stratolounger is greased and I have lots of popcorn and beer for the show.

Really beautiful work Dan, amazing.  Congratulations on a wonderful model!  Glad to see you added furled sails to the build.  Looking forward to your next projects.

Just to follow up on Charlie's question, what finish did you use on the boxwood?  It really looks nice.

Mike

Thanks Mike.

I would love to say I used some 'special' varnish mix for the Boxwood, but I just sprayed it with  good old Minwax matt finish in a spray can.

The trick is to get the hull wood sealed as soon as possible after you are happy with the sanding, and build up several layers of varnish. That allows for a lot of inadvertent glue marks, paint etc to be scraped away later in construction without affecting the wood itself underneath.

When the model is finished, the final finish is done with Minwax flat varnish from a can mixed with Acetone and sprayed with a small, cheap hobby spray gun. The acetone melts the surface of the original varnish when it hits it, blending or removing scratches and marks and then evaporates very quickly leaving an excellent flat finish.

For those that are (still) interested, I received a couple of photos of Boston's new home. The client is an orthopedic surgeon and a keen woodworker. (No surprise really as he uses similar tools for both!)

He built the exquisite table and base for the model as I was on the final stages of construction and finally married the two together last week.

As you can see, the table is stunning. What can't be seen in the photos is the top of the baseboard is beautiful quartered and inlaid burr walnut panels. The Boston is somewhat overpowered by the reflections but I think it lets the beauty of the table stand alone.  I will of course be getting better photos later but I can't imagine finer surroundings for my work than this.

Dan,

I just discovered your BOSTON! Fantastic work and a beautiful end result - kudos!! I've entertained thoughts and did research on BOSTON a few years back - your interpretation is very well founded. My ideas were almost parallel in how I would have attempted to build a BOSTON.
