HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD

To Dziadeczek: Yes, I am sure, this is a screen around the seat of ease, you can see under it the outlet (it was not always used there) which drains dirt to the sea - so as not to pollute the hull of the ship. I have these information from one of the greatest experts on ships construction and history. In Czech forum you can find him as Kpt.KL.
The crew got inside through the top hole as they climbed down the shroud. During the battle this screen was removed. It is not positioned immediately above a gun port but is shifted a bit to the side.

Here are some Van de Velde drawings with various design of that thing:

And these smaller barrels could be intended for salted meat etc. as was mentioned above:

large.jpg.cbd96ccee8381d89a991f64818cb3314.jpg

Aha, I understand. Are you building your exquisite model together with him? On the nameplate I see your name in the left lower corner, and in the right lower corner his, "Kpt. KL"

Or is he just a historical/know how expert for you?

Regards,

Thomas

Yes, as TOM G wrote, I create and build the model by myself, but Kpt.KL gives me plenty of professional advice for more realistic result. I appreciate his help a lot, he learns me (and also other people) to do things better - not only making nice looking models, but also models corresponding to a real ships.
There are several models of the Royal Katherine that people build according to this modeling plan:

1667.jpg.273e567937d82a1abd4c6d7149f0ed22.jpg

https://www.amazon.in/Bauplan-Katherine-Modellbau-Modellbauplan-UY-W8EHF3196054/dp/B01IAKRG6W

but the result does not correspond to the design and construction of real English ships around 1670. In this plan there's a whole bunch of total nonsense that the planmaker invented.
My question is - why to spend thousands of hours building something, what is only nice but not tied to a real ship, when I can do it correctly according to the reality in the same work?

Therefore, my model is based on historical evidence, quality literature and archaeological findings. I know that I can't always manage to do it right, but if I can, I try. It's the most demanding project I've ever done.

I am trying to improve making wooden blocks to reach more realistic result. I use only basic tools (knives, raspers, sandpaper) and mainly my hands.  Here are several pics of blocks (with red points) I made last time, and you can compare them with others that were made in the begining.

I also hung the fore and main lower yards on the masts for imagination, how large the model will be. The main lower yard is about 55cm long.(proportions are partly based on the plans of the HMS Lenox)

Thank you dear friends for your comments and "likes".
I am pleased you enjoy my work.
Now I am finishing the cannons for lower and middle deck. It remains to make 32 smaller cannons for the upper and quarter deck but 18 of them will be fully detailed with rigging. I have given a detailed tutorial to this thread some time ago if you are interested in "how to do".

I have to admit that I am totally bored of such monotonous work.... Oh yes, I told to myself in past - "I will never build a three decker again"... Well, and I couldn't resist it again....😃

Hello Jan,

yes, there is visible only front part of these cannons so I have decided not to make unnecessary details on their aft side. Some of them I even had to shorten because there are reinforcement and stiffeners inside the hull.
On the other hand, the cannons on upper decks will be made in great detail, because everything will be well visible.

Thank you for your kind words and all the "likes", dear friends.

The cannons are finally placed inside the model; all are movable and able to adjust in height. Now the Royal Katherine looks much more like a warship.

Hi Doris,

happy newyear to you!

With guns she looks terrific. Is it the picture, or do the two aft guns on the lower deck have a lower calliber than the other guns? It looks as if they are not so thick as the others, and more like the guns on the upper deck.

Hello dear friends,
I am really honoured reading your praise and kind words, I do appreciate your comments and likes a lot. Thank you very much for your support.
Well, there are always various things or details I would like to improve in my work. Nobody is perfect, but it is a good motivation - trying to do things better.... This card model could by one of the most successful I have ever created, and also the most challenging. Hope I will finish the Royal Katherine this year, but there are plenty of problems to solve - especially some parts of rigging.

Hello Jan,

You are right - these cannons are different - here are some documents according to which I made cannons for the Royal Katherine;

_RK-Vale-dela-EDIT_.thumb.jpg.a636e79c2479eecb31122f12630165de.jpg

in the aft section on lower deck there are the longest cannons (Culverin) with lower caliber - in this picture are in a red frame:

244437066_cannonsforRK.thumb.jpg.fe8e6c959dd8322832edc884b642c192.jpg

And now I am continuing with other 14 cannons ( demi-culverin) for upper deck:

Hello Doris,
happy New Year !
I am always enthusiastic about your work. Not only are your sculptures unique, all other details cannot be surpassed in their execution. This type of model building is not available anywhere else in the world.
I hope that you will continue to delight us with beautiful pictures of your wonderful model in 2020.

Thank you all, dear friends, I greatly appreciate your support.
Thank you also for the superb inspiration that I am finding in your threads on this forum, I am impressed by the perfect craftsmanship and also the realism. I admire your work a lot and also try to improve my models and want to shift them to a higher level of realism.

I would like to ask you for advice - do you have any idea what these two ropes with tackles (hooked on the upper deck) were used for? Do you have any diagrams or drawings with complete running of these ropes? ( I do not know from which point they started on the upper place - from mast or yard??)
I would like to make rigging on the Royal Katherine correctly, unfortunatelly plenty of details I was not successful to find anywhere.😥

I was thinking the same.  Yu want them out of the way when not in use, but easy to reach.

Thank you very much, guys, that’s a great idea. They really could be lifts for the ship’s boats. I would like to place them on my model as well. I assumed that these ropes should be easily detachable in order to use the capstan.

I have just finished other 14 pieces of demi-culverin for upper deck. The last 18 pices (10x demi-culverin for upper deck and 8x saker for quarterdeck will be made with all details).
