Although the assembly line is still going full throttle, thought it was time for an update.

I set up a mock cannon station (thanks, MOBBSIE) to verify the required length of the breech lines.  Turns out, Chuck was dead on with 3 1/4", eye to eye.  One eyebolt/ring is seized to one end of the line, a second eye/ring slipped on then the cannon (and one more eye/ring).  Then the other end is seized to an eye/ring at the exact length.  That's 0.018 Morope by the way:

The cannon was then glued to the carraige and the loose eyebolts attached to pre-drilled holes.  The cap squares over the trunnions were simulated with short strips of 1500 grit sandpaper.  I have used painted artists tape in the past but this was much easier.

The assembled gun was then glued to the deck and the breech line rings attached to pre-drilled holes in the bulwark:

Here are the sternmost 5 guns in position.  Keep in mind that these guns will be totally obscured by the quarterdeck overhead:

post-56-0-41449600-1417721122_thumb.jpg

I experimented with the tackles but they just look too crowded to my eye.  I'll re-evaluate when all guns are positioned.

Here's what it looks like from outside:

Finally, Ron from NZ asked for an overall shot:

Being a 'few' guns short of a 21 gun salute, I'll get back to work and hope to have then all in by Christmas.  No rush ---- I'm having too much fun.  Heck, the Admiral (who last wandered over to my side of the shop when I was cutting out the bulkheads) proclaimed 'This looks pretty nice  ----- but where do you THINK you're going to put it'?  I have about another year to negotiate  :) .

Everyone stay well.  And keep making my day with your updates.

Hi Augie,

She looks impressive! You mentioned you seized the 0.018" Morope at the eye rings. What did you use and what size was the seizing thread?

Regards,

Larry

Looking really good Augie. I like John's solution. Good luck with the negotiations - I find that bribery works quite well, especially jewelry (but save that until you're almost done, for maximum impact).

Looks really good Augie! Go ahead and take John's advice, except, if you can't run too fast, then 1st, put on a helmet, then real quick, hide all the sharp objects in the house.  :o  ^_^

Cheers

Nice cannon work, Augie.    Use my philosophy... If they growl, hug them.  If they scream and turn red in the face, run across the room to a safe place and throw chocolate at them.  :D  :D :D

Really nice Augie. I love the blackened brass and natural wood look. I am not usually one to add a critique but is the breeching to bulwark attachment a little close to the gun carriage? It probably does not matter but I was curious.

You may be right Dave.  But I'm satisfied with the way they fall at this point.  I'm thinking they would look different if the guns were shipped inboard.

Hi Augie,

She's coming together real nice mate. Those cannon do look the business mate, it's always nice to get some teeth in place. If you do put the tackles on what size blocks will you be using? I would just add that the gun stations were a crowded and busy part of any ship.

I  really laughed at all the domestic advice you've been getting mate, it seems the Ned Kelly look is in in Aussie. If I can just add my little nugget, I just ask the question and look at her with big puppy dog eyes, I might also add that it hasn't worked yet, so I might just go for spiked shoes and the Ned Kelly armour.

 Looking forward to further updates.

Hey Augie, real nice work on the guns, I know what you mean about looking a little crowded when you add the rigging. I did that on my Supply and really wasn't that pleased the way they turned out.

But, if you've got really good eyesight and small enough blocks ,with your talent you'll make them look real good. with that said , I wish you and the Mrs. a very "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and a HAPPY NEW YEAR !!
