That must be as strong as the Rock of Gibraltar now! As far as the cleat being upside down, I can't see it. Good to see you back soldiering on!

Sjors is correct on this....and he may be too late. We can't tell where your mast is from this photo. But yes, the shrouds will angle to where they attach to the mast so you generally wind up with a sort of triangle arrangement. This might give you the angle to clear that gun port. Of course then you would need to re-attach all the chains and they would probably all need to be modified for length. Tough call, DC

Should work as a waterline marker as well. On the comment.....I'm confused --- but that's normal. Back to our regular programming. -
Beautiful work on those yards. If it's any consolation, there is usually much swearing here when it comes to belaying lines.

Fret not....you're not the only visual learner around here. It is often I have the 'little book' open and the plans spread all over as I wait for the 'light' to come on between my ears. Sometimes, there's a power failure up there and it takes a day or two! As an aside, don't know if you have balsa there or not. But keep in mind it is extremely variable when it comes to physical properties. It can vary in density from about 4 pounds/cu. foot to almost 6 times that figure. That greatly affects the hardness as does the moisture content. Old balsa can dry out and almost turn to stone ---- you weren't far from wrong with the term 'fossilize'. Carry on, mate! -
Gee, too many old guys around here. I won't even be 70 until ....... November Many happy returns, Bob.

Very innovative ---- and a great result! Well done, mate. -
WOW .....what a reception! Hearty thanks for all those attending the party. I really appreciate everyone stopping by. This round of encouragement gives me the shot in the arm I need to soldier on. Be closing down the workshop in about 2 weeks to take a long delayed vacation......and I'd like to leave her in Bristol fashion.

Today is HAPPY ANNIVERSARY day. One year, to the day, from the start of Confederacy. Just over 650 hours in the log. This being a special occasion, I'll suspend my usual rule of not posting until a step is complete to show where we are as of today. The majority of the gun deck has been planked (Swiss Pear). No sanding or finish yet....just swept up to remove the in-process debris. Planking has been a slow process as I've been cutting hooked scarphs to butt up against the margin planks. I hadn't done this in my previous models so it's been a learning curve. Fortunately, it has been working out well and I have also bolstered my scrap pile in the process: I must say I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. Pear is like working with cast iron when compared to basswood but it holds a good edge. I need to cut another dozen or so scarphs and fit the few remaining planks. Then well do our treenailing, sanding and finishing. Hope to have this all completed within the next few weeks.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
