Well... last update had her arriving in the canal early-ish tomorrow morning... In the mean time, I've not been idle. Trying to get as much done as possible before I go. Installed the main preventer stay and started working on the foremast shrouds. I think the foremost shroud counts as the longest served piece made yet. The cut splice wasn't nearly as hard as I first imagined, it just took a little figuring out. The overlap opening is 30mm in case anyone is wondering. Anyway, some photos out in the sun again, seems you folks like this sort of thing... I'll be back home again on Monday, all rested and ready to resume building. Got some cleaning up to do since we had two large rotten old oak trees taken down today (a really good decision, since the cost of removal was far outweighed by the cost of possible consequences of leaving those old trees standing). Anyway, all is good and I shall return shortly. We had a big wind storm back in 2007 and there was a 100+ year old Elm that went down. It didn't make a swish sound it was solid as a rock. Luckily it fell acroos the street and only took out powerline, if it had fallen 180o the other way it would have split the neighbours house into. A friend had a large old oak like that removed last year as it died from a lightning strike. Due to its position, within falling range of 2 houses and 2 garages, they had to get a bonded tree trimmer and it ended up being $1200 US just to fall it. Bob and Dana ended up doing the removal work themselves, which gave them a couple of winters worth of fire wood. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Earlier in the summer we had to get a branch removed from another tree (it had split and was hanging forty feet up in the air), we figured since we had someone there with the gear, we'd have him check out a few limbs on the oak. After climbing about ten feet, the tree started resonating like the mother of all base drums and the guy decided he wasn't going to climb any higher. In the end, the cottage and all who use it are safer, and in less then a generation the corset canopy will have covered the hole and new trees will also have grown up. According to the crew on Friday, there was some blight that struck a lot of oaks twenty five years ago, or so, and many are now becoming hazards. Business is good if your an arborist.
