at wood supplied by @cafmodel is very good, once the Char is removed it needs nothing else doing to it, other than the bevel, which is marked where required. however i have not bevelled mine, i will use the marks as reference when the time of sanding arrives

good evening everyone

day 23  transom timbers fitted

the last frame (57) caused me a bit of trouble, it is wider than the jig, so was lifting the keel away from the jig base, im glad i spotted it before fixing the stern timbers in, all i had to do was fair them off roughly and it dropped back into place

the timbers themselves all fitted exactly as per the instructions, and i also pinned them into position

what is the proper name for the stern timbers? sorted

IMG_7805.thumb.JPG.1a2cf355f102f429ad03d446aa1b734e.JPGIMG_7806.thumb.JPG.86d23b6a1778578f34a715c9d09213c7.JPGIMG_7807.thumb.JPG.3f2fcbf517b9f63ae70423059edb0b61.JPG

nearely made a big mistake tonight and put the deck mounts in the wrong position, I presumed the blue line on the plans was where the boards go, but looking ahead, i could see that the cannons would be far to high

so i checked another build and found the blue line refers to the top of the deck, which means i would have been 7mm to high, the build i found was after he had actually finished  and had to rip it all out

so i have protected the plans with tracing paper, and drawn a new line under that, so i now have my deck beam heights

The stern frames are called "transoms"

Is it the pictures or does the cherry really have that much color variation??

thank you

been getting dark over here much earlier, and the flash is kicking in, mading the wood appear quite washed out, not had many outside photos of this build, but this is one of them, i did go for the cheaper option, and maybe there is a more of a mismatch in wood colours, BUT, i also never expected it to come together like it has, so im more than happy

Kevin, if you refer to profile Plan No.4 you will see a purple line marked from stem to stern. This is the level of the top of the deck clamp upon which the deck beams rest. The deck beams are 6mm. deep and the deck planks are 1.5mm. giving a height of 7.5mm. That is the line marked on Plan No.6 to which you have referred and is at the correct height for the cannon at the gunport.

The top horizontal timber you have added at the stern is the wing transom and the three below are filling transoms. The two vertical timbers each side that you have yet to add from the deadwood to the lower filling transom are the "vertical filling pieces".

Thank you @Tankerman

i have actually drawn the line at 7.2mm so i will go just a little deeper tomorrow, it was very handy having the laser etched cannon template handy, otherwise i could have been in a right mess tonight

Well spotted  mate, its amazing how a  few mill  here or there  adding up to 7mm  can make so much difference, if I remember  with my  Greyhound build I had to do something similar,    she is coming along just fine.

Day 24 keelson

good evening everyone

well i have made it this far, no where as nice and tidy as others that i have seen, but i do tend to show it as it is, and as stated many times before, i never like what i have produced, im allways wanting to do better and lol never achieving it, however the the admiral loves it and so does my doggie

the upper keel. i thought would be a two minute job, as i have been test fitting as the frames went in, WRONG it has taken me hours to get a decent fit on 80% the stern one will wait until tomorrow

Looking very good, Kevin.  It looks like from the pictures you have built quite a few POF's.

It depends on the wood, how well it was seasoned, and where it was cut from the log and also same tree or different trees.  But generally, with age, it does darken quite a bit and becomes pretty uniform.  But that's my experience and yours or anyone else's may vary.

Good evening everyone, thank you for likes and comments

Day 26 deck beam supports

i have realised tonight, that there is so much to think about on this build, im not in a hurry to do things that are not in sequence, that might be for two reasons,

1 i dont have anything else to do that is out of sequence, and may be the

2  is the same as the first

i have the next two part to the build, but CAF are resupplying some of it, hopefully will be here this week

the point i was trying to make is that im in no hurry to go and make deck fitting or cannons,  mast parts, as i am constantly thinking about the project that is on the go at present, and personally i think it is a good thing for me, lol its the most difficult kit i have ever done, and i aint got to the thinking about bits yet

the deck beams on my build  serve two purposes, first to support the deck and also to keep the frames in an upright positions,  hopefully she can then be removed from the frame to enable some sanding to be done

as previously mentioned the deck line on the plans is the very top of the deck not the deck supports,  so the beams and deck planking has to be subtracted from the line shown which represent 7.5mm

i had no idea how to put the beams supports in place so i came up with my own idea of using nuts bots and washers, it came in very useful, but very fiddly, i also put lower temp deck supports in (the white beams), to enable, ensuring both side were right, or at least both would be wrong

the bow planks were soaked for a coupls of hours and clamped in place

securing the planks, i never used just wood glue, i have drilled 2mm holes through the beam and frame and and used wooden cocktai sticks with glue on as a very oversized treenail, i will let you know if it works, but seams very secure at present, non of this will be seen

I can't believe how quickly you've progressed with this.

What are those beams made from? Are those suggested or your own idea?

the white ones are my idea and very temp and will be removed when both side are done, i used them because  with the curvature of the frames and the jig it was difficult to mark the hull with the correct height, they are set just right to fix the deck supports in place, im sure there is a much simpler way of doing it

Great work Kevin. You are experimenting and I like the solutions you are coming with.

It is not a simple kit, between the charred wood to remove and the large number of parts, all looking the same.

I cannot wait to see you holding the fully framed hull !!!

Thank you my friend, i reckon completion date wil be 12 feb 2023 at 1645, fully rigged with sails

I think the correct term is ribbands and they were temporary rib supports installed during construction to hold and stiffen the frames in place until the actual planking was installed. So if you are not fully planking they are totally appropriate (and functional) to keep in place!

Thank you @ASAT that makes sense, if i was to fully plank one side and a few planks above the keel on the other i guess i could refrain from using them

Superb Kevin !! The Man and his ship!

That model is massive and the 1/48th scale is the ideal scale (in my biased opinion...) to model Period ships.

Yves

agreed but my HMS Victory would have been about 3m long

Looking excellent  also looks strong (you would have thought delicate at this stage)    with the Three stringers  I would have said  they were there also to show the the line of planks like what we do with string or paper strips to show how the flow of the planks.

i was surprised just how rigid the hull is, but every joint other than the frames themselves are pinned and glued
