I don't think I'm quite ready to tackle a ship of the line type kit though. I'm still just dipping my toes in😏

Your Sopwith Pup is looking fantastic!

I think you’d do just fine!

You should check out the Shipyard kits.  They are around $30-$40 USD each if you get the 1/96 ones.

They also have a few real nice 30th anniversary combos for around $60-$70 USD that come with between 2-3 kits of varying skill levels.

I bought the Northern European Sail Part 2 set and am seriously thinking about buying the one with the two Dutch Vessels.

Ab Hoving’s scratch building in card tutorial is great too!

There is surprisingly little difference between building a kit and just working from scratch (also surprisingly little difference between building a POB ship in card and building in wood).

Hi Edward,

You've convinced me to actually do a build log of the WAK Morane-Saulnier G, a model I completed some weeks ago. The log is here.

You're doing really well with your Sopwith.

Cheers

Hello again, another hour on the pup, and the top wings are attached. 20221001_204729.thumb.jpg.f5e900ebcee5d0c8ed9403861eff0486.jpg

The struts were a little bit fiddly 20221001_204707.thumb.jpg.9d12d8f8e85d56d92c5ed78848b2d6d1.jpg

then trying to line the struts up with the tiny pinholes in the top wing was even worse.20221001_204717.thumb.jpg.fe735bf9a96e35f4361e80d0d1280745.jpg

Next time I'm going to attempt do all the rigging on it. The diagram to do this is slightly  vague, as there are no steps to follow, just lots dashed lines showing the runoff the rigging.

Thank you to those who've commented, hit the thumbs up and just visited.

Double wings on biplanes are a bear to do and you've mastered it.  I'm not sure if there is a page on rigging the Pup though I have seen it for other birds in the past.  Usually it's just photos that someone has annotated.

Getting the rigging done on these is a combination of getting a general idea of how biplanes are rigged (comes through practice), learning to read and interpret rigging diagrams (also comes with practice), and scouting images on the internet (yep -- practice . . . nah, just kidding on that one).

Thankyou gentlemen, I think I've worked out the run of all the lines, after a long perusal of the diagram and lots of looking at various pictures of other models and full size Pups.20221002_221023.thumb.jpg.a55dc5bb58bb851cdf270c2cd60b2ea6.jpg

so I've started with the rigging at the back. This may take a while😊 20221002_221145.thumb.jpg.09513d9ededdd18fdbbe254fb14dbbf1.jpg

I'm using fine black EZline. This is the first rigging I've done since Sherbourne and I'm a bit rusty.

Thanks for all the comments, likes and having a peep.

Bit more done with the tailplane rigging 20221004_214941.thumb.jpg.fb5ebeea49df22cdaab8a5a28095e96d.jpg

another long look at the rigging diagram and I think that's it for the rear of the plane.

So before I move onto the wings I've got a couple more bits to do, starting with the weapon.20221004_224241.thumb.jpg.3f418274b79f6e86a5c7d912539c3164.jpg

the version I've done has the Lewis gun.

To be honest I have toyed with the idea of buying the aftermarket  weapons, but that would feel too much like cheating😇🤭

As always thanks for visiting, commenting and all the likes.

Rain has stopped play, early day from work, so I used some unexpected free time to put together the Lewis MG20221005_125953.thumb.jpg.d177553b01b1359aca5804ce52a363a7.jpg

The tweezer ping happened as I was trying to attach the handle, so improvising and overcoming, a small piece of brass wire became the handle.

It goes without saying, the barrel is brass too, I've still not managed to roll the small tubes satisfactorily 😬. I'll keep practicing though 😉. Just have darken the edges.

Thanks for looking in and the likes.

A little dull gray-black on the grip and no one's the wiser. 😀

So,  I  managed to complete the rigging, fit the gun and then realised that the windshield needed fitting 🙄. So very carefully in order not to snap any cables or knock the gun off, glued the very last piece on. That's it, my first serious card model finished 😊20221008_074107.thumb.jpg.f03dfbbfd7d35ad632acad4be84de395.jpg

There are plenty of lessons learned, mainly to take a bit more care with glue, especially the CA used to attach the rigging.

Taking more time to match the colours for the edges, is also something I'll need to do next time.

All in all, it's been a fun little build, I've enjoyed building this plane. It was fairly straightforward, and would be a very suitable subject for  novice card modellers.

Now for some more photos.20221008_074225.thumb.jpg.9ae5a4278f67020d5e213b8cabf34b47.jpg20221008_074240.thumb.jpg.46d02d5a8488ba377a80950ebb411de6.jpg20221008_074305.thumb.jpg.dbad13f3e40988393e43b89f4f0f051a.jpg20221008_074418.thumb.jpg.dce5c8a2cddfefa36f18e45b7b5cbf89.jpg20221008_074449.thumb.jpg.0a9cc0f31443a50cc71a7cb41d6504a7.jpg20221008_074549.thumb.jpg.f4f761d052ad2df6b91a3ccf299b66b9.jpg

Till next time
