That tuck frame is a really cool detail.  The red counter is a great example of how colorful ships could be in period.

The cross section of your hull planking shows how incredibly good your planking skills are. The joints are perfectly tight though out the thickness of the planks, not an easy task.  I forgive you for hiding this nice detail with a perfect stern section ;)

For everyone following this project, especially those of us contemplating embarking upon it somewhere down the road, I offer a bit of inspiration. There is a wonderful painting by Montague Dawson entitled ~ The Fleet Messenger ~ which depicts one such as this under a full press of sail in advance of a squadron of ships of the line.Just type in the names and several images, and sources, will come up.

That square tuck is a wonderful detail and precisely executed by you - as we'd expect. I quite like what I see as a slight translucency in the red paint - you can perceive the planking underneath. I'd keep it that way myself and perhaps you intend to?

Cheers

Alistair

Thank you Alistair

Red is a very transparent color to paint with.   If you use thin coats it will be somewhat transparent.  I have many more coats and more sanding to get it where I want but it will most likely have some transparency.

I found some workshop time....so I finished planking the starboard side.  Its a big milestone but then I look at the port side and have to repeat the entire process, including the square tuck   But it all worked out very well.   Once the other side is finished I can start treenailing.   :P

That's some beautiful planking work Chuck. I hope the planking on my "Connie" turns out as well. But then again, if it does, I won't want to paint her as she should be.  :o

Cheers and I hope you and yours have a Happy Holiday

To reduce the transparency of certain reds, the first coat of paint should have a little white mixed in. This will create a dark pink but, panic not! The subsequent coat or two of red alone will give sufficient coverage.

Wow, that's a really beautyful planking. Do you like to copper her?

Thanks Guys

Christian...I wont be plating the hull.   She probably was copper plated but few contemporary models including the Surly ...They were not plated.   The Surly model was painted with white stuff.   I couldnt find anything definitive about it so I am going to leave the hull as is.

Hello Chuck

About red transparency; this is a solution that have given me excellent results.

The wood stain industry pursue transparency, no brush strokes, homogeneous color and a smooth sheen finish.  All the attributes we need for red in the gunport etc.

I mixed water base polyurethane (Varathane, 266228 MATTE) matte finish with Crimson red acrylic (Winsor&Newton, Galeria) at 2/3::1/3 volume to volume.

I prepared the surface with water base pre stain wood conditioner (as if it was going to be stained).

The first cover with the mix was dark magenta/pink with a lot of transparency. The second cover turned deep red magenta no brush strokes. The third cover was perfect Crimson with nice transparency and clean finish. Each cover dried quickly within minutes.

I have been working on both models and wanted to show the finished square tuck and Cheerful.  I am just about done with the planking but will be doing a tech session next Tuesday night at my club meeting.  So until then I wont be getting more done.  I may however move ahead and start treenailing.   I have only five strakes left as you can see and its killing me that I cant just finish it up.  But a week will go by really quick.

Chuck,

I very much admire your Cheerful, and Winchelsea builds, and I'd love to build a model of the same calibar!

Will Cheerful ever be available as a kit? Or will it be sold purely as a set of plans with a practicum? I am weighing up a complete scratch build similar to Cheerful, or buying a "semi-scratch" kit from someone like The Lumberyard.

Thanks,

Jon

I will be offering the bulkheads pretty soon.  But thats it.   It will never be a complete kit .  Only a few items to help the scratch builder.

Count me in for a set of the bulkheads. HM Cutter Cheerful will be my no. 3 build, just as soon as I finish the Niagara.

Spent the day treenailing...woo-hoo!!!   Managed to get half of the starboard side done.   I am using a #78 drill bit for the size.  They are subtle which I like.  In fact here is a close up as it may be hard to see in the full profile image.  But it ads the nice texture I like without looking to measle like.  Clicking on the two bottom pictures might give you just a hint of treenails although it may also be my photography skills.
