Licorne by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - POF - TERMINATED LOG

Recommended Posts

Without all those frames on my build, I had no where near the sanding, but it still seemed like I was doing it in my sleep. If we gain anything from this hobby it's repair/re-work and sanding skills!

Posted this and then realized I forgot to say how great she's looking!

Thanks for the "likes" and comments... finish sanding with the "good" paper will wait until the whole  hull is planked.  Yeah, I know, the longer I wait, the more there will be.  :)

Popeye,  I think you might be right but if it's what I think it is, it's wood that will be cut off.  The trim line is supposedly just in front of the first frame which I just re-checked and I'm good..

Anyway, need to resolve some issues at the stern.  More later.

Well, I hate to say it, but this log is now terminated. :(    I knew about a year ago that it might come this but not in the way I thought.   There's been a lot of lessons learned and I'll give some of them as they are also reasons for terminating this log.

However... I will be starting a new log on Licorne once a fresh supply of framing material arrives.  :)

Lessons learned:

1) Use only one set of drawings.  I started by using two and assumed that they were dimensionally the same.  Wrong!

2)  Be darn sure that the reference points are adhered to throughout the build.   A couple of points on this one.   Hahn's drawings use a 1/4 inch build board, I used 3/16 inch thick board.   My confusion came on as I thought his measurements went from the bottom of the build board up.. they didn't.  Only the frame drawings had the full build board thickness and I made a faulty assumption but apparently not consistently as I'm off as much as 1/16th of inch in places.

3)  Add reference lines in the cutting process of frames.  I took measurements after the frames were cut and was led astray by 2).

4)  What I found acceptable even two months ago in my build, I find unacceptable now.

5)  I've discovered better ways of using my power tools with time and usage.

6)  Use only quality wood and reject out of hand anything less than quality.  There's places where I "made do" and I'm less than happy about it.

7)  Keep the fingers away from spinning tools -- like milling bits and saw blades.

8)  Even the master messes up.  I noticed in photos that there's errors where things just didn't go together right on Hahn's model and he tweaked it.

9)  It's a hobby dammit!!!!!!!!   Slow down and enjoy the trip not the destination.

Anyway, thanks for following along on this journey of discovery and I hope the next will be better.  It has to be since I learned from this one.

Lastly, expect more idiotic questions as I go... It's still a learning process.

See you on Licorne... Version II.

Mark

Hi Mark. Sorry to hear about the need to restart the Licorne. Reading your points of learning I see

that I've suffered each and everyone of them but unlike you l haven't learned from them.

Good luck with Licorne 2.0.

Mark, Your work has to continue to satisfy your desire to continue, when this changes for whatever reason, one sits back and reevaluates the whole process and why we engage in it in the first place. The bottom line is that sometimes there are too many issues to continue, and so a restart or entirely new build usually results.

Your reasons regarding the differences in information would most likely become more and more frustrating, so I can see and understand your decision.

I have always felt that the journey is far more important than the destination, and you have obviously used this journey well.

I look forward to seeing your next log.

Very sorry to hear this.

Your log was a great inspiration and helpd me a lot in the last year to find my way. To much perfectionism is also bad, You will never be satisfied with the result of your build. This was/is my biggest problem. Your log helped me to come out of this spiral and I found the fun on building a ship model. Thanks for this.

Hi Mark

Sad news indeed.

However as you mentioned it is still a hobby.

Perhaps  -only for a while-  take some distance from it and  depending from your persoonal taste enjoy a few good beers or a glass of wine,  make a stroll,....

and very soon we'll be following the Licorne version 2.0 buildlog.

Take care !

Kind regards

Christian

Mark, I don't think that I could do what you're doing -- in fact, I know that I couldn't. I'm sure that I would try to tweak it to be "good enough". I have nothing but respect and admiration for your decision not to do that. Like everyone else, I look forward to version 2.

Hello Mark,

I guess that post 466 must have been one of the hardest posts you have ever written. Thanks for the Lessons.

I am kind of speech less… But I wish you the best with the Licorne V.2.0. I think all that mental effort you have done once will make easier the path ahead…

Best wishes again.

Daniel.

So sorry Mark that things worked out this way. It must have been very hard to finally come to this decision. I have enjoyed following along and will be looking forward to your new log.

Hi Mark,

If I would have to face this situation,  I would also think that it is a difficult way to learn. But the desire to build and create is much more stronger.

I tried ounce the the Hahn way with the frigate of 44 guns, I would not try it twice, the main reason being I do not like to work upside down.

Did you know that some 20 or 25 years after  Hahn, a little  genius by the name of David created a method:

- much more enjoyable to build

- much more similar to the real method to build and

- much more easy to build

Mark, you will probably want to go  in the Licorne V2.0. I am not trying to tell you not to go. I just wants to make sure that you are aware that there are easier ways to build  and mainly that you will get plans in a much higher degre of accuracy and details with peoples like David and Ed, and that the better the plans are the better the results are going to be... it is simply mathematic.

Mark: after your investment of time and money, that is a brave decision you'll not regret.

My first serious scratch build, many years ago, ran into many of exactly the same problems as you describe. I, too, decided to junk her. On my next model I was able to avoid all the pitfalls I'd fallen into the first time around. I ended up - some years later - with an award-winning model. May this be your experience also!

This is truly devastating news.  I can imagine how you feel terminating the build but applaud your attitude to take it as a learning experience and soldier on with another project.  This experience will certainly guide your modeling career as you move ahead.

Your many dedicated followers here will patiently await you selecting a direction for your next venture.  Though Licorne may have brought you valuable experience, she also brought many friends and acquaintances eager to see your ultimate triumph.  I am but one among them.

GOOD LUCK, my friend.

Like Druxey, my first plank on frame model was scrapped after a year because it was not up to spec. Your second version will no doubt be built on a better foundation and I guarantee you won't regret starting over.

Hi Mark,

Good luck on version 2.  I think this is a good call if you wouldn't be satisfied with version 1, and I'm sure version 2 will come out fantastic.  Just think of version 1 as a learning experience  :)
