I've been planking the gundeck bulwarks, but it's slow going. Current state is in the photos. One side done with planking and the other almost there. Ports are being cleaned up the side that's done. In the middle of this, I'm also considering how much detail to spend time on in the areas under the fore and stern castles. When those get planked it will dark.. bitch black for the most part. So sorting out what I want to do versus what I can do. I'm leaning towards the "full monty" as such but maybe cut back on the gun rigs to only breeching. Hahn apparently took lots of shortcuts such as not bothering to plank the area under the stern lights. The ANCRE Belle Poule shows a lot detail that I'm thinking about. Decisions, decisions.... Your thoughts remind me of the philosophies of two very different people John Ruskin was of the opinion that just because an element was not seen was no excuse for not doing a good a quality on the work as that on work that was visible. versus McNally who built miniature ship models for paying customers and noted that it was not right to do work and charge customers for work that could not be seen even if is was correct. I know that both of these ways are heresy to some and not to others that said.... we make our choices, and the important notion here I suppose is for what purpose is the work being carried out, once we answer that question the next step is likely easier. I guess it would depend on what you'll need to do when it's time to deck those areas over. sure.......don't go nutz with the cannons.......just where your certain they will be seen........but if your going to have the deck beams with the knees and all that, you may have to do the complete job, so everything will fit. A brief update... sanding like mad when I can but time has been rather precious this last couple of weeks. Replacing planks that popped loose (not sure why though) and some decision making gong on. I looked inside my head, and realised that I wouldn't be happy if I didn't do the max that I'm capable of. I did on the the Constellation and next to nothing can be seen on the gun deck... so full speed (for some value of "full") ahead and I'll be adding more details. Once sanding is complete, I'll pop a couple of photos. Footnote.. I think I found a major (?) boo-boo. Hahn shows a tiny window between the 2nd and 3rd gunports from the stern. Inspection and reflection of the Belle Poule show that there's some (I'm grasping for the right words here) a beam with brace for securing the lower end of the main course sail. Apparently of iron. I'll sorting out how to fill in the hole.. maybe a bit of ebony with the piece coming outboard. Make all look like blackened iron? I finished the planking the interior of the gundeck and have sanded it all pretty smooth. Still needs another pass with the sandpaper, IMO, along with some crack filling. I also need to make some "trim" bits (fiddly) for the cabin. To break the monotony of sanding, I have started work on the gun carriages. I just need to find a good time to start the guns themselves. Here's the pics as she stands in the shipyard today. I'm running an inventory of eyebolts, rings, and some blocks to see if I have enough to fit out what's needed on this deck as well as the outside hull.
